For many disabled veterans, fly fishing is about much more than catching fish. Standing in moving water requires focus, patience, and being present in the moment. The distractions of everyday life fade away as attention shifts to the current, the cast, and the possibility of the next rise.

Fly fishing provides a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and connection. It helps veterans reconnect with the outdoors, build lasting friendships, and find peace in places where words are often unnecessary. The river doesn't care about limitations, it simply offers an opportunity to keep moving forward, one cast at a time.

That is the power of programs like Project Healing Waters and why time spent on the water can be so meaningful for those who have served.

Healing Those Who Serve

“Invisible wounds are the hardest to heal. Their closure depends upon the love of others, on patience, understanding and the tender gift of time.”

June is National PTSD Awareness Month and we encourage everyone to help raise public awareness of PTSD and its effective treatments, not only this month, but throughout the year. We can all help those affected by PTSD.

“You all saved my life. And I don’t say that lightly. This program has turned my life around and I want to be part of life again. I found hope on the river.”

Fly fishing restores hope and offers many the chance to both physically and emotionally rehabilitate and recover. The power of community, camaraderie and care provided by Project Healing Waters programs and volunteers exposes thousands of veterans to our healing waters each year. Together we provide disabled veterans with the support they need on their journey to recovery.

In the world of Project Healing Waters, “Tribe” isn’t just a catchphrase for us. It is the heartbeat of everything we do. When Veterans gather for a weekend on the river, time around a fly tying table, or while building rods, they share more than just fishing tips. They share stories of loss and victory, of sleepless nights and hard won mornings. This fellowship reminds each Veteran that they belong to something bigger than themselves, a community that understands, supports, and uplifts one another. That sense of belonging can break through isolation faster than any therapy session alone.

Every time you volunteer as a casting instructor, help pack gear for a new participant, or simply listen as a Veteran recounts their journey, you’re strengthening our Tribe. You’re saying, “I see you. We stand with you.” If you’ve felt the power of this community firsthand, invite a fellow Veteran to join us. If you’ve never been to a PHW event, consider volunteering or joining one of our local programs, because building connections off the battlefield can be the most transformative mission of all.

Honoring all the members of our armed forces who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," Memorial Day is one of the most important and solemn days on the National Mall. Across 250 years of American history, starting with those who fell while fighting alongside General George Washington in the Revolutionary War to recent conflicts, we will never forget our heroes. The military memorials on the National Mall are stunning tributes to hundreds of thousands of people who laid down their lives for freedom. Today we lay wreaths at these special places, but every day, walking past stone walls and metal statues, we recognize the loved and lost and offer the thanks of a grateful nation.
