Neffy | Musician | Hopelab x Djerassi
Neffy is a self-taught musician, producer, and composer from the Washington D.C Area. A winner of NPR’s national Tiny Desk Contest, selected from over 7,000 submissions, she has toured the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe as an independent artist, completed a Sofar Sounds residency in London, and served as a judge for subsequent NPR Tiny Desk Contests. Her work sits at the intersection of soul, folk, and R&B, built on lyrical precision and emotional honesty. She has collaborated with cultural institutions and brands including NPR, Sofar Sounds, AFAR Magazine, and Emergent-Seed, and her music has reached audiences across multiple continents through independent distribution alone. She is currently completing her most significant body of work to date, a self-produced album rooted in the place that made her.

Cathleen Luo | Artist & Educator | Hopelab x Djerassi

Cathleen Luo is an artist and educator working in ceramics and installation. They currently teach at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Their art practice integrates their pedagogy of radical care with sculptural processes, centering connection, touch, and modern spirituality through participatory encounters with their ceramic figures.

Their work has been exhibited at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Field Projects in New York City, and recently in Every Woman Biennial at Pen + Brush Gallery in New York. In 2024, Luo was awarded the Asian American Arts Alliance’s What Can We Do Grant to lead community arts programming in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Additional support includes The Color Network Studio Grant, the SICK Magazine Grant for Disabled Sculptors (2023), and CERF+’s Get Ready Grant (2024).

In 2025, Luo participated in Powerhouse Arts’ Artist Subsidy Program, producing large-scale ceramic works with the support of a fabrication team.

Eric January | Visual Artist | Hopelab x Djerassi

Eric January (b. 2001 TX) is a multidisciplinary artist from Chicago. whose practice spans sculpture, painting, and found materials to explore memory, migration, and Black interiority. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Howard University, his work is rooted in cultural storytelling and the transformation of everyday objects into charged vessels of meaning. Drawing from personal lineage and ancestral histories, January engages material redemption and the sublime, reconfiguring familiar forms into conduits of embodied knowledge that move across time. He has received painting scholarships from Howard University and Black Hawk College and has collaborated with institutions including the NBA, Nike, and Microsoft, while living and working between Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

Mark Antony Howard | Multidisciplinary Artist | Hopelab x Djerassi

Mark Antony Howard (b. 1999, Springfield,OH; lives and works in Brooklyn) is a visual artist, actor, musician, and photographer. All of these practices inspire one another.

Inspired by music, films, tv, ART, his surroundings, his upbringing, etc. Mark Antony’s paintings and drawings try to make sense of it all. His work tries to make sense of these times we’re living in. He tries to make sense of what it means to be black in this world. What it means to be a young black man in this world. Black boyhood. His work tries to make sense of grief sometimes. His work tries to make sense of the past and present. Of dreams. Of greed. He tries to make sense of the senseless. He tries to make sense of his own feelings. With a pencil and some paint.

Mark Antony had a solo exhibition (‘This Isn’t Goodbye’, 2025) at Palm Grove Social in Los Angeles curated by himself with the help of his community. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University.

Congratulations to 2025 Djerassi alumna Gauri Awasthi on the publication of her debut poetry collection, ‘Mother Wound.’

Published by Trio House Press and featured on Ms. Magazine’s Best Poetry of 2025 and 2026 list, Mother Wound explores inherited trauma, identity, and healing through a daughter’s perspective. Structured around the rhythm cycle of Indian classical music, the collection traces the patterns of generational trauma passed through women.

“My time at Djerassi was unsettling for my work in the best ways; it opened me up to what it means to complete a project – this book—and to starting new chapters, especially rethinking ecology /effect of place on my poems. More importantly, I found some of my closest friends and artists that I continue to be in conversation with during my time there, and it was a true gift of time.”

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ARTFUL HARVEST 2026!
This past Sunday, we gathered on the Djerassi land for an unforgettable afternoon celebrating art, creativity, and community!

From an incredible exhibition and lively auctions to captivating performances by Djerassi alumni Shinobu Eto with Jorge Bachmann and McArdle Hankin and Ellison Libiran of Back Pocket Media, the day was filled with moments worth remembering. Guests also enjoyed an exceptional dinner by The Village Pub, and w**e by Neely and Thomas Fogarty, surrounded by the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our artists, alumni, donors, sponsors, partners, and everyone who joined us in making this year’s Artful Harvest such a special celebration. Your generosity helps us continue providing artists with the time, space, and freedom to create.
