Press Conference on Policy Recommendations

๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐ŸŒ On 21st May, Global Unites South Asia proudly launched a significant national collaborative process aimed at shaping a youth-led vision for justice, healing, sustainable peace, national unity, and long-term resilience in Sri Lanka.

Led by Gen Z and Millennial voices, this initiative recognizes that lasting development cannot be achieved through economic progress alone. A truly prosperous future must be built upon trust, reconciliation, accountability, dignity, and peaceful coexistence among all communities.

For decades, Sri Lanka has experienced recurring cycles of division and conflict. Through this process, we seek to contribute to breaking those cycles by creating meaningful opportunities for young people to actively shape the future of their country.

This initiative is grounded in extensive consultation and evidence-based engagement, including:

โœจ A national youth survey engaging more than 2,500 Gen Z and Millennial respondents across all 25 districts
โœจ Consultations with youth leaders, grassroots communities, civil society representatives, and religious leaders from every province
โœจ Analysis of Sri Lankaโ€™s past experiences in justice, reconciliation, and healing to identify lessons learned and opportunities for progress
โœจ Development of practical, youth-informed policy recommendations for a more peaceful, just, and united future

This is more than a policy process. It is an opportunity to ensure that the voices, experiences, aspirations, and concerns of young people are reflected in shaping the future of Sri Lanka.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all partners, researchers, volunteers, youth leaders, and community stakeholders who have contributed to this journey.

Together, we continue working toward a future built on understanding, inclusion, justice, and sustainable peace.

๐Ÿค One Country. Many Voices. Shared Future.

My name is Mayoshi Gayflor from Grade 12A at The Buchanan SDA High School, and I had the privilege of participating in the Liberia Unites school relations engagement on our campus. It was a truly inspiring experience for me. I actively joined the discussions on youth leadership and service learning, and it opened my eyes to the importance of taking initiative and giving back to my community. I am very grateful to the Liberia Unites team for visiting our school and sharing such valuable knowledge with us. The session was both engaging and empowering, and it has motivated me to do more as a young leader. I am excited about the upcoming programs and look forward to being part of them. After graduation, I am also willing and ready to volunteer and continue contributing to this meaningful movement.

Hidden Heroes in India

In the heart of Kolkata, a quiet story of faith, heritage, and coexistence unfolds across generations.

Siraj Khan is one of the Muslim caretakers of the Beth El Synagogue, a responsibility his family has upheld for four generations. His father, Khalil Khan, and before him his grandfather, all served in the same role, preserving one of the cityโ€™s oldest Jewish places of worship.

His brother continues a similar legacy at the Maghen David Synagogue, together carrying forward a tradition deeply rooted in care and respect. For decades, Muslim families such as the Khans have maintained Kolkataโ€™s synagogues, not as outsiders, but as custodians of shared heritage.

Siraj welcomes visitors with a white kippa, offering it with quiet dignity, while living within the synagogue premises and tending to its daily upkeep. In this space, religious divisions fade into the background, what remains is trust, respect, and continuity.

Today, with Kolkataโ€™s Jewish population reduced to only a few dozen, these synagogues stand more as living heritage sites. Yet the commitment of their Muslim caretakers remains unchanged.

As Siraj reflects, โ€œReligion has its own place, while we have ours. This is something we never think of. The Jews respect us and we respect them.โ€

This is not a symbolic gesture of tolerance, it is a lived reality of pluralism, preserved through everyday acts of care across generations.
