Afterschool professionals play a crucial role in determining the quality of afterschool programs, which help reduce risk factors and positively influence youth outcomes. Programs led by skilled professionals contribute to improved social-emotional skills, better school attendance, and enhanced academic performance.

SFC's Winn Brook Extended Learning Program in Belmont recently started a leadership-based pilot with Playworks, challenging 3rd graders to lead games and develop conflict resolution skills on the playground.

Dearborn Academy, operated by Schools for Children, is one of New England’s premier state-approved, special education day schools for students in Grades 3 to 12. Students receive specialized help learning skills needed to overcome challenges that often are the result of anxiety, depression, OCD, executive functioning, language-based, and/or other learning difficulties.

Dearborn provides a comprehensive academic program that, in addition to the core subjects, includes woodworking, jewelry and small metalworks, art, theater, and music. Specialized instruction includes Wilson Reading, speech and language, and occupational therapy. Its therapeutic services combine weekly therapy, clinicians who are embedded in the classroom, and multiple family supports.

"It was helpful for our son to have a 1:1 dedicated clinician and access to support staff any time they were needed. The staff took a strong interest in figuring out how best to help out our son - he felt supported while he was at STEP. Everyone we met in the program was knowledgeable and kind. We built trust with the team and felt very comfortable sending our son to STEP every day, even when days were hard. This is huge for families like ours that have been through a lot." - Parent of Dearborn STEP Student

“Woodworking, metal and jewelry shops, studio arts, pottery, ceramics, fiber arts, computer lab, and even a music studio, a set of offerings greatly enhanced by the MCMA grants over the years, help build hands-on skills that carry over into other subjects and help put academics into a real-life context,” said Rebecca Altepeter, Dearborn’s Head of School.

At Seaport Academy, the vocational curriculum offers students a gateway into the trades. Seaport students recently completed dragon heads made from wrought iron, using tools that they made by hand at Prospect Hill Forge Blacksmith Shop.

A shout-out to the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association for their longstanding, generous support of our vocational programs!
