Overnight, emergency services responded to a fire originating in a single apartment at Willington Woods, a senior residential community operated by Access, located at 25 Senior Way in Willington, Connecticut.
Thanks to the swift response of the Willington Fire Department and emergency service personnel from surrounding communities, the fire was quickly brought under control, and all residents were safely evacuated with the assistance of responding emergency teams. We extend our sincere gratitude to the firefighters, emergency medical personnel, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who worked together to protect our residents and community.
According to information available following the incident, four individuals received medical attention, including one resident who was transported for serious injuries and three others who were treated for minor injuries. We have not received further updates regarding their conditions. Our thoughts remain with those affected and their families, and we hope for their full recovery.
Members of Access’s executive leadership team were on-site during the incident, working directly with emergency responders and local officials to coordinate the immediate response, assess the situation, and support residents throughout the evacuation and reoccupancy process.
Following inspections by local fire and building officials, the building was cleared for reoccupancy, with no structural damage identified and utilities remaining operational. Through the coordinated efforts of emergency personnel, local officials, and Access leadership, residents were able to return to their apartments within just a few hours of the fire.
While the building was determined to be safe for reoccupancy, we recognized that the quick turnaround meant some lingering smoke odor remained as ventilation and cleanup efforts continued. Understanding that these conditions may be uncomfortable or concerning, particularly for residents with respiratory sensitivities, Access offered temporary alternative accommodations to residents who preferred not to return immediately.
Our team remains on-site today, October 10, checking in personally with residents, assessing any damage or cleanup needs, and coordinating appropriate repairs and additional support. We are working closely with those affected to address individual concerns, make necessary arrangements, and minimize disruption to their daily lives.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the local fire marshal, and Access continues to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities.
