Adoption Success Story: Chance 🐾💛

Sometimes the most beautiful happy endings belong to the old souls.

Chance, our sweet senior guy living with mast cell cancer, has officially found his family. This loving old man has been adopted and will spend the rest of his days on a farm, surrounded by love, comfort, and all the spoiling he deserves.

We are so grateful to the Martin family for opening their hearts and home to Chance. Senior pets and pets with medical needs have so much love to give, and Chance is no exception. We know he will fill their farm and their hearts with joy.

And honestly? They have questions.

The FURever Homes 5K, 8K & One Mile Fun Run is coming up Saturday, June 13 at Jamestown High School, and we need more runners, walkers, stroller-pushers, coffee-drinkers, dog-lovers, and “I’m just here for the medal” people at the starting line.

No judgment. We support all fitness journeys, including the ones powered by Starbucks, iced tea, breakfast, and adorable dogs.

Your registration helps Heritage Humane Society care for homeless pets right here in our community - the seniors, the kittens, the big goofy dogs, the tiny spicy ones, and everyone in between.

On March 10, 2026, a sweet stray pup arrived at our doorstep. We named her Lisa.

After her stray hold, Lisa went to live with a wonderful foster family with three children while she waited for her spay appointment. But then something unexpected happened. Lisa started gaining weight… and soon we learned why.

Lisa was pregnant.

Before long, she gave birth to 12 healthy, strong, absolutely adorable puppies. Her babies were loved deeply by their foster family and showered with daily attention, snuggles, and care. As they grew, some of the puppies needed to be separated into additional foster homes, and - no surprise here - their new foster families fell in love, too.

Today, Lisa’s puppies returned to HHS and had a very big day. They soaked up attention during puppy yoga, met lots of loving community members, and then did what puppies do best…

They slept.
And slept.
And slept some more.

They were gently passed from child to child and barely woke up. But once they finally did, the puppy play began - and now they are ready for their next big adventure.

What started as 12 puppies is now down to just 2 still waiting. We had five foster failures, which are always some of our favorite kinds of “failures,” several puppies are foster-to-adopt until after their surgeries, and sweet mama Lisa will get to enjoy her life with two of her babies.

All around, today was a very good day for the pets at The Heritage Humane Society.

If you have been thinking about adopting a puppy, today might be the perfect time to visit. Lolli, a female, and Hershey, a male, are still available for adopters who live in our service area of James City County, Williamsburg, or York County. They are delightful, playful, soft, snuggly, and unbelievably cute.

Stories like Lisa’s are only possible because of foster families, adopters, volunteers, donors, and a community that shows up when pets need help. Thank you for helping us be ready for Lisa - and for the next mom, litter, senior pet, injured stray, or scared animal who arrives at our door.

🧘‍♀️🐾 Stretch, smile, and soak up some puppy love this Saturday at Puppy Yoga with The Heritage Humane Society!

What better way to start your weekend than with gentle yoga, wagging tails, and plenty of puppy kisses? These adorable puppies are ready to help you find your zen (or at least distract you from your downward dog with their cuteness!).

Whether you're a seasoned yogi or have never stepped onto a yoga mat before, this class is designed for all experience levels. Enjoy a relaxing morning of movement, mindfulness, and puppy snuggles while supporting homeless pets in our community.

We are so excited to welcome Lisa’s littermates to this special class! These cuties have been raised together with their mom, Lisa, in a wonderful foster home, and they are absolutely precious.

We are still sorting out which puppies already have applications, so Saturday morning will be a surprise for all of us - but we can guarantee more cuteness than you can possibly imagine.

🐾 ADOPT GUNNER 🐾

Looking for a best friend who can keep up with your adventures and then happily relax by your side? Meet Gunner!

Gunner is a big boy with an even bigger heart. He loves long walks, exploring new places, and then kicking back to enjoy some quiet time. During a recent stay with a volunteer family, he spent hours happily wandering the backyard, chasing balls, playing tug, and even splashing around with a garden hose and pool. If you're looking for a beach, river, or outdoor adventure buddy, Gunner may be your guy!

His foster family describes him as the perfect mix of adventure companion and chill partner. His ideal day? Walk, play, relax... then do it all over again. He is housebroken, sleeps quietly through the night, and is respectful of both people and belongings. He loves car rides, tug-of-war, pup cups, and spending time with his favorite humans.

Gunner is a social guy who enjoys meeting new people. He greets strangers politely with a wagging tail and has done great in public outings, including a recent visit to Williamsburg Jewelers where he calmly met customers and relaxed in the store. He is gentle and polite with children ages 7 and up.

He's also treat-motivated and eager to learn, making him a wonderful candidate for continued training. Gunner does well with female dog friends, though a meet-and-greet is recommended. He can be sensitive about touch and prefers gentle, minimal petting while he gets to know you.

Gunner has proven himself to be trustworthy in a home, is not destructive when left alone, and keeps his living space clean. Most of all, he's a loving dog who lets you know exactly how much he cares with his soulful eyes.

ADOPTION SUCCESS STORY - AGENT K 🖤🤍🐾
“I make this look good.”

My name is Agent K, and I spend my life in a tuxedo… just like Tommy Lee Jones in the Men in Black movies.

I used to live at The Heritage Humane Society shelter - not for very long, though - because I purr a lot, I’ve always been super cute, and I “made nice” with everyone who met me.

Heritage Humane was great. I was very well cared for, and the staff and volunteers were kind, attentive, and loving. I got high marks for being friendly and affectionate - like I said, I’m a pretty good boy. My first human loved me very much but could no longer care for me, and it made him very sad to say goodbye.

Then, in 2023, I found my forever home with my favorite human. I call her “The Treat Lady.” She says I completely run the house now, which honestly seems accurate.

I should mention that The Treat Lady calls me an “escape artist” because I think I’m destined to be an outdoor cat. The few times I’ve slipped out of the house, the grass felt amazing under my paws. She insists I stay inside because she worries about my safety, which means my dreams of becoming an “intrepid explorer” are currently on hold.

Still… I have to admit my indoor life is pretty incredible.

The Treat Lady lets me do basically whatever I want. Sometimes I make her move her laptop so I can knead her arms and legs like I’m fluffing pillows before settling in for a nap on her lap. At bedtime, I tuck my head under her chin and purr-snore myself to sleep.

Our house also has lots of windows, which is perfect for sunbathing while watching birds, butterflies, rabbits, and even deer wander through the neighborhood.

So yes… I have a charmed life.

Thanks to Heritage Humane and The Treat Lady, I found exactly where I belong — and every cat deserves to be this fortunate. 🖤
