Our guest speaker today at the regular Rotary Club luncheon meeting was Kimberly Sherlaw, Director of Community Giving for Edmarc , a national leader in pediatric home-based hospice and palliative care. She was joined by Dr. Allen Hogge, an Edmarc board member.
Saying “Edmarc is truly special,” Kimberly told us how they provide medical care and also focus on the emotional needs of young patients and their families, making them “part of the Edmarc family.” Kimberly said, “even after a patient receives a healthy, stable discharge, Edmarc will be there for them.”
She showed us a film featuring young patients and their families receiving the special home-based care provided by Edmarc.
For more information about Edmarc, how to make donations to support their work (Kimberly informed that for families, “there’s no bill from the Edmarc family” for services provided), and especially to volunteer with them, visit www.edmarc.org

Our guest speaker yesterday was Nancy Williams, Executive Director of Dream Catchers of Williamsburg, a premier therapeutic riding center in Toano with this stated mission:
“Dream Catchers enriches the lives of children, adults, and families through equine assisted services offering education, empowerment, healing, and hope.”

Nancy’s presentation centered around a new video shown at their recent gala fundraiser, and featuring some of their clients. A military veteran with mental health challenges talked about the benefits he receives from the Operation Mount Up! program; the mother of a previously non-verbal adult son spoke about how he began speaking after interacting with the horses; after receiving equine therapy, a woman with physical limitations said “my attitude shifted because not everything in the world is dark” and “I feel like I can do anything;” an Alzheimer’s patient was shown enjoying horseback riding; and a cancer survivor said the experience helped with emotional healing.
Nancy informed that their newest project is developing a program for at-risk youth, and said there are a number of ways people can help Dream Catchers meet its mission: volunteer there, sponsor a horse, and donate funds. For more information, visit www.dreamcatchers.org
In the photo, Nancy is shown receiving a $3,000 donation from Clay McEldowney, President of our Rotary Club of The Historic Triangle Foundation Inc.

Each year, the club sponsors a team in the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League and our team the Padres play in the 9–10 Majors division. Games are played on Field 3 at the Warhill Sports Complex. Last night, they had a tough loss to the Dodgers but played hard and with great sportsmanship, so they are representing the best of youth sports.

Saying “traveling gives me a lot of joy,” Rotarian Keboklie Dengu-Zvogo told us in her Classification Talk yesterday how travel played an important role in her professional life. After earning degrees from the University of Zimbabwe and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland – and after stints with several social services agencies – she was a resident director for Pitzer College, working with U.S. students in Africa.
That work started in Zimbabwe, moved to Botswana when repressive government officials came into office in Zimbabwe, and finally to South Africa. Kebokile detailed how she and her Pitzer students interacted with a local Rotary Club that sponsored a Rotary Global Grant to help supply period products to girls so they could fully benefit from educational opportunities.
During her time working in Africa, after moving to Claremont, CA, and now here in Williamsburg, Kebokile’s community service work has included time with Women and Law in Southern Africa Trust, the International Red Cross, United Nations Assoc.-Pomona Valley Chapter, the Rotary Club of Claremont (CA), Michaela Makhosi Foundation, the Williamsburg Baptist Church, and, of course, our Rotary Club.
With her experience and interest in developing Global Grant projects, we hope Kebokile helps spearhead our Rotary Club’s involvement in such projects.
