For grieving students, returning to school is about more than a new grade, new teacher, or new routine. It can mean navigating another school year while carrying the weight of grief.

Recognizing and responding to grief can be an important part of supporting the whole student. Students may struggle with concentration, behavior, attendance, friendships, or simply making it through the school day. And sometimes, the students who need support the most aren’t the ones who ask for it.

Rick’s Place partners with schools to support students who are grieving and the adults who care for them. We provide school-based grief support groups, grief awareness events, professional development, and resources to help school communities better understand and respond to grief.

As summer comes to an end and families prepare for a new school year, we wanted to give our caregivers a chance to slow down, take a breath, and enjoy a little time for themselves.

On Monday, our caregivers were treated to manicures, facials, and massages, while their kids spent the evening exploring various art activities, enjoying pizza and popcorn, and having some fun of their own.

We are grateful to the incredible service providers who shared their time and talents with our caregivers. Thank you to Bella from Mobile Manicures, Diane for the facials, and Ryan for the relaxing massages. And to our wonderful volunteers, thank you for helping make it all possible.

Together, we helped create a little space for our families to relax, connect, and feel cared for. 💛

We were honored to host Governor Maura Healy today for a visit at our new, expanded Rick’s Place location!

During the visit, Governor Healey toured our new space, learned about the importance of grief support programming in our communities, and intently listened to both former and current participants share how Rick‘s Place support has made a positive difference in their lives.

Governor Healy truly recognizes the impact that death can have on youth and families, and how programs like ours can be a beacon for those navigating loss.

Thank you, Governor, for taking time out of your very busy day to stop by and meet with us. It was a wonderful visit that we will be talking about for a long time to come!

A little sweetness can go a long way! 🍫

Thank you to 360 Federal Credit Union and their members who purchased candy bars in support of Rick’s Place. Those small purchases will turn into meaningful support for the youth and families we serve. We’re so grateful for your generosity!

During May & June, proceeds from our in-branch candy bar sales benefitted Rick's Place, Inc., and today we were so happy to deliver a donation of $392.68!🍫🎉

A big “thank you” to all of our members who purchase candy bars- Your support truly makes a difference and helps organizations like Rick’s Place continue providing compassionate care and support to those in need.

We had the opportunity to visit their beautiful facility, and we were so impressed by the warm, thoughtful environment they’ve created. It’s clear how much heart, kindness, and care goes into everything they do.

During the summer months, Rick’s Place shifts from our traditional twice-monthly peer support programming to offer special opportunities that bring our families together for fun, connection, and community.

This past week, we were fortunate to have our volunteers, Jim and Peter, lead an evening of fishing at Spec Pond here in Wilbraham! They shared basic fishing techniques, helped with equipment and provided plenty of encouragement along the way. We are so grateful to people like Jim and Peter who generously share their time, talents, and expertise with our families.

We also want to extend a special thank you to Jim for donating all of the fishing poles and supplies to Rick’s Place in memory of his son, Gus, who loved to fish and explore nature. We are honored to carry his memory forward in this special way. 🎣❤️
