Emotion-Based School Avoidance: What It Is and What It Isn’t

When a child is struggling to attend school, we need to look beyond attendance figures and explore what is making school feel so difficult.

Emotional distress can present in many ways, and children do not always have the language or understanding to explain what they are experiencing.

Throughout my years of supporting children, I have seen how important it is to identify the underlying barriers rather than focus solely on getting a child through the school gates.

Pressure may achieve attendance, but it does not necessarily reduce distress.

Understanding the reasons behind school avoidance is the starting point for meaningful support.
