As the 104th Illinois General Assembly spring session came to a close this week, the Muslim Civic Coalition is reflecting on a challenging but consequential legislative session marked by hard work, strategic partnerships, and grassroots power.

👉 Swipe to see how our community showed up, what we achieved, and how we are building toward what comes next.

While we celebrate important policy and budget wins, we are disappointed that funding for halal and kosher meals in public schools and the repeal of the anti-BDS law did not make it across the finish line this session.

Still, together we secured major wins, including millions in public benefits, emergency assistance, and healthcare protections.

Eid al-Adha Mubarak from the Coalition Staff and Board. We wish you and your family peace, joy, and countless blessings on this special day. 🕋💛

For those who may be unfamiliar: Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the holiest days in the Islamic year. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to God and is observed by Muslims worldwide through prayer, gratitude, charity, family gatherings, and Qurbani (the practice of giving meat to family, friends and those in need). It also marks the culmination of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah.

As we celebrate, we also acknowledge the heaviness many of us are carrying in this moment. In the wake of the anti-Muslim terror attack in San Diego, at a time of continued assaults against our communities in the name of immigration enforcement, and amid ongoing genocide, war, and displacement across the world, we are holding grief, fear, and uncertainty.

And yet, we are more determined than ever to live our faith out loud and show up fully before our Creator, honoring the sacrifice of those before us, building a better future, and taking a moment to live life fully in celebration — because that too is an act of liberation.

In observance of Eid al-Adha, our office will be closed on May 26th and 27th.

Last week I held a subject matter hearing on HB 5754 in front of the Appropriations - Elementary & Secondary Education Committee. This legislation would appropriate $5,000,000 to fund the Faith by Plate Act, ensuring that halal and kosher meal options are available in state facilities and public schools across Illinois. With this bill, we have an opportunity to ensure that every child, regardless of faith, has access to nutritious meals that aligns with their religious dietary needs. Thank you to Amina Barhumi of the Muslim Civic Coalition, Maryam Hafiz, and Matthew Stone who provided testimony in support of the legislation.

On May 20, the Muslim Civic Coalition joined hundreds of advocates at the Illinois State Capitol for the “Stand Up for Palestine – End the Censorship” rally with the Illinois Coalition for Human Rights (ICHR).

We stood together to demand the immediate repeal of Illinois’ unjust anti-BDS law. A historic hearing was held, but the bill was not voted on, meaning the fight is far from over.

On May 19, the Muslim Civic Coalition testified for $5 million in funding to fully implement the Faith By Plate Act and fund halal and kosher meals in public K-12 schools. With budget negotiations currently underway, this is a critical moment.

Executive Director Amina Barhumi and student leader Maryam Hafiz urged lawmakers to fund this historic law, the first in the nation to guarantee halal and kosher meals for students.

Your voice matters right now. Please contact your State Senator and Representative today and ask them to support full funding for the Faith By Plate Act.
