Earthplace Earthplace is a non-profit organization focused on the natural world and sustainability.

Earthplace provides hands-on, nature-based learning experiences throughout childhood into young adulthood, as well as environmental education programs for teens and adults. Our 2.5 miles of trails across 63 acres of protected sanctuary are open to the public, free of charge from dawn to dusk. Our building with over sixty animal ambassadors and an interactive discovery area is also open to the publ

ic daily, with nature and animal-oriented drop-in programs. We offer a fully licensed, accredited preschool, summer camp, kid and teen programs, as well as volunteer and internship opportunities and much much more.

The northern metalmark butterfly, endangered in Connecticut, is making a comeback! 🦋

Timothy Brown of Highstead reports that the 2026 annual butterfly count recorded 39 metalmarks at the survey site in western Connecticut. That’s a big jump from the single-digit counts typically recorded there! 📈

For many children who grew up at Earthplace, Jim Hunter was so much more than a teacher or camp counselor. He was a beloved educator, mentor, naturalist, and friend. He inspired curiosity, confidence, adventure, and a lifelong love of the natural world. Again and again, we have heard the same sentiment from those whose lives he touched: Jim was Earthplace.

We were deeply saddened by his passing this spring and will be hosting a memorial gathering in Jim’s honor in the coming months. Details will be shared as plans are finalized.

In the meantime, we invite you to visit earthplace.org/jimhunter to remember Jim with us through some of the many memories shared by our community. His legacy lives on in those he taught and inspired at Earthplace.

That’s a wrap on a wonderful summer camp season at Earthplace! 🌲☀️

Our weeks were packed with muddy adventures as our campers splashed in streams, explored the nature sanctuary, and learned something new every day.

Thank you to our campers, camp families, and staff for making this season so magical. We can't wait to welcome you back next summer! 💚

Did you know Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows each year for s'mores? This S'more would prefer 90 million pounds of hay. 🐹🌾

Exciting news from our trails! 🌱 Our conservation interns teamed up with the Connecticut chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) to plant American chestnut seedlings inside our protected deer exclosure. 🚫 🦌

Much of our forest is made up of native beech trees, which are in rapid decline due to Beech Leaf Disease. We're planting these fast-growing chestnuts to help restore our forest canopy.

We're happy to report that the young seedlings are thriving! As they grow, they will fill the gaps left by the beeches and eventually provide habitat and a nutrient-dense food source for local wildlife. 🐿️
