🌟May is ALS Awareness Month 🌟
🧬 And 2026 is shaping up to be a historic year for the ALS community! From the highest-ever federal funding ($315M!) to breakthroughs in precision medicine targeting TDP-43, the science is moving faster than ever.
🚀 New trials like VectorY’s PIONEER-ALS are expanding globally, and we’re seeing the first signs of blood tests that could detect ALS years before symptoms start.

💔We are saddened that Eric Dane, the actor best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died less than a year after revealing he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 53.

Dane starred as family patriarch Cal Jacobs on hit HBO teen drama show Euphoria. Before that, he was perhaps best known as Dr Mark Sloan, or ‘Dr McSteamy’, on medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

The California-born actor was diagnosed last year with ALS and spent the last few months raising awareness for the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND).

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” reads a statement from his family.
He was married to fellow actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he had two children.
The written statement said he spent his final days surrounded by friends and his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, “who were the center of his world”.
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received,” it said.
Dane also played Jason Dean in fantasy drama series Charmed, and Captain Tom Chandler in action drama show The Last Ship, while appearing in films such as Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.

Israeli scientists found a way to stop ALS nerve cells from breaking down by adding a specific microRNA molecule.

In lab tests on human cells and mice, this microRNA stopped the damage and even helped the nerve cells regenerate.

The treatment works by preventing a toxic protein (TDP-43) from building up and killing motor neurons.

Researchers say this could lead to a new kind of gene therapy for ALS, with hopes of moving toward clinical trials.

By 2040, experts estimate that nearly 400,000 people worldwide will be living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the UK Biobank and the University of Turin, Italy, have identified a distinct set of proteins in blood that can detect ALS with remarkable accuracy up to a decade before symptoms appear. Results of the new study, published Aug. 19 in Nature Medicine, lay the foundation for a much-needed diagnostic test for ALS.

Early symptoms of ALS : Image

In ALS news, a new coalition aims to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to accelerate drug discovery for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Answer ALS is teaming with partners including GATC Health — a drug discovery company focusing on machine learning and neural networks — Louisiana State University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, and Tulane University. The State of Louisiana is helping fund the initiative, known as the Louisiana AI Drug Development Infrastructure for ALS (LADDIA).

“This is more than a research partnership, it’s a strategic investment in the future of ALS discovery,” Clare Durrett, executive director of Answer ALS, said in a organization press release.

The project will build on the Answer ALS Neuromine Data Portal. This openly available research repository, the largest of its kind, includes biological and clinical data from more than 1,000 people with ALS.
