Linda Beutler grows a great variety of plants on a simple city lot in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Her passion for clematis led to the publication of her first book, Gardening with Clematis (2004) followed by two more Timber Press titles: Garden to Vase (2007), and 2016’s Plant Lovers Guide to Clematis. But before clematis, there were old garden roses.🌹

Linda serves as curator of the Rogerson Clematis Collection (owned by the non-profit Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection), North America’s only accredited clematis collection, and she is a past-President of the International Clematis Society (and still serves on the Council). In July 2018 she was presented a Golden Clematis Award by the International Clematis Society for her service to the Society and the genus Clematis. She has been an adjunct instructor of horticulture at Clackamas Community College (CCC) from since 1996, specializing in herbaceous perennials—their cultivation and design—and cutting gardens for home and commerce.💐

Linda lectures internationally on a variety of gardening topics and is an avid garden traveler. One of her favorite destinations is the shale barrens of Virginia, where little grows except clematis. Look for her public webinar content at www.clematisinternational.com. ⤵️Join us for Linda’s demonstration of Herbaceous Clematis Division on Saturday June 13th during Inviting Vines. Tickets are available at the link in our bio.

He is a popular lecturer internationally on topics of design, plants, and ecology, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with professional and amateur audiences for 45 years. He escorts garden and natural history tours throughout the United States and abroad through Garden and Nature Tours. Cole is principal of Native Landscape Design and Restoration, which specializes in blending nature and culture through artistic design. In 2008 Cole received the Award of Distinction from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers for his work promoting sustainable gardening practices. His work is part of the Smithsonian Archive of American Gardens. He gardens on 12 wild acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Read more about his talk at Inviting Vines below ⤵️ Learn from naturalist, award winning garden writer, and garden designer Cole Burrell as he reviews where some clematis plants are found and describes their individual natural environments. Cole led the Chikumas on a tour of the southeast United States to show them many clematis species in the wild. Although the Chikuma’s had already used some of these clematis in their breeding programs, this exploration helped them understand the nature of these plants more deeply. Deepen your knowledge, too! ⛰️

Mikiyoshi and Tomoko Chikuma were the owners of Chikuma Nursery in Kawasaki City, Japan. Mikiyoshi and his family ran the nursery for about 50 years. They grew large-flowered clematis but later switched to small bell-shaped varieties, creating many of their own hybrids available today. Tomoko has graciously offered to share her knowledge on bell shaped clematis as well as flower arranging in two different talks during Inviting Vines 2026! Read more below ⤵️ • Enchanted by bell shaped clematis - Absorb the history of breeding bell shaped clematis flowers for the Japanese cut flower trade. Tomoko Chikuma will illuminate the dedication of Mr. Kazushige Ozawa to his life’s work, using American clematis species in the creation of many of his hybrids including ‘Roguchi’. Learn how the continued work of Mr. Ozawa’s nephew Mikiyoshi and wife Tomoko Chikuma • significantly expanded the world of small-flowered clematis🔔 • Flower Arranging with Clematis - Observe and learn from these floral artists in an in-person and interactive demonstration. Tomoko will demonstrate how she often uses floral arrangements at home. Americans admire and use Japanese style arrangements while the Japanese often use American style floral arrangements. Explore this cross over of cultures in floral design.💐
