I got involved in Casting 4 A Cure 13 years ago out of need. A need to help friends do whatever they could to help their daughter Ella fight a terrible disease. As I sit here in isolation in Victor, Idaho hoping all my friends and family are safe from a different enemy, a couple of things overtake my thoughts...
Where I live, most of my closest friends, the things I’ve been lucky enough to scratch off my bucket list... most of these things have been a result of that one 3am phone call from Bill Farnum saying, “hey, let’s do a fly fishing tournament to raise money for RETT Syndrome”.
There is one thing I’ve learned in my 13 years being involved with this incredible C4C community. Good people rally around good causes. I’ve always heard the expressions “dress for success” and “hang around better people than you, they will make you better”. As a young punk I never thought about those phrases much, but there is no doubt in my mind that the people involved in this community have given me many role models to look up to.
I’d like to share one with you real quick.
One of our first sponsors with C4C was a guy named Don. He was a guy chasing a dream of opening Washington’s first distillery since the 18th Amendment. Don showed up in Victor with some vodka and gin, and a love for fly fishing and helping anyone in need.
Fast forward 10 years.... Don is still one of our major sponsors. We don’t call Don and ask for anything. Don calls us and says “Can I do this?”
Don has now taken it to a new level.
Earlier this week, our friend somehow managed to get through all the red tape and was allowed to use his distillery to start producing sanitizer to help fight our newest enemy. Don has called in many friends to help with ingredients, packaging, etc. to get this done. This will help thousands of people in his community battle the spread of the Coronavirus.
Oh yeah, Don is doing all of this free of charge.
I know Don will probably read this and downplay his effort, but credit needs to go where credit is due. The World needs people like Don more than ever right now.
Find a way to get involved. Help your neighbor... be a part of the solution.
Thank you Don! You are a true hero!
