We are hosting our monthly can and bottle drive this Saturday from 11-12, but with a twist! We’ll also be collecting new, unwrapped toys and games to help the Tigard Breakfast Club with their toy drive for Ronald McDonald house. Come out and see us, drop your cans and bottles off and bring an unwrapped toy!

It’s been a minute since we’ve been on social, but we’re back! September and October have been busy months so far for Willamette Rotaract! Last weekend we hosted a river cleanup at George Rogers Park where DG Jim and AG Terry joined us! We collected seven bags of trash, likely weighing 10 lbs. The weekend before we skated the night away at the Roller Disco and earlier in September we had another successful can drive. Stay tuned for more updates to come - we have a great month planned.

Happy !
This week, club member Garrett wants to shine some spotlight on the arts that people are missing out on at the moment by talking about Darcelle's!

One of the industries hit hardest during the COVID-19 pandemic is arts and entertainment. With large confined gatherings putting many at risk of infection, regular and seasonal shows scheduled for theaters, art galleries, and other venues have had to postpone or cancel, putting the organizations behind those shows under a financial burden to continue to operate.

One of those artists with their doors closed temporarily is Darcelle XV & Company. Darcelle is the world’s oldest working drag queen, and has been a mainstay in the Portland LGBT community for over 40 years. Her show, also featuring other local drag queens, usually plays four nights a week at the Darcelle XV Showplace in downtown Portland. Larger pageant events and celebrations that occur each year have already been canceled for 2020. However, the standard show serves as a great introduction to the art of drag for anyone unfamiliar or unsure of that performance, and the supporting cast help to create a safe, queer-friendly environment to enjoy.

After reaching out to Darcelle’s to find ways to help them at this time, they have let us know that they are hanging in alright while their doors are closed, but they are really encouraging people to please come support the shows as much as possible once they are able to begin performing again. For more information about Darcelle and to stay up-to-date on when they will need your help and support again, please visit their page at https://www.facebook.com/DarcelleXV or go to http://www.darcellexv.com/.

Happy !
For this week's spotlight, club member Matthew wants to share more about Meals on Wheels People.

Founded in 1969, Meals on Wheels People started serving seniors living by themselves, providing them with meals, human connections and social support. The severity of the current pandemic has put their services in desperate need. Currently, Meals on Wheels People in Portland are producing 5,000 meals, five days a week, for people in Multnomah, Washington, and Clark Counties. According to their website, they are in need of volunteers to provide a friendly phone chat to the seniors they serve, handmade cards to give out with their meals, and face mask donations, To learn more about how you can volunteer or make a donation, head over to their website www.mowp.org.

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, many businesses and organizations could benefit from community support now more than ever! Willamette Rotaract will be starting Spotlight Sunday where club members complete write ups on local businesses and organizations to let you know how they could use your support!

For our first club member Keisha wants to let you know more about the Oregon Food Bank and Hunger Fighters.

Willamette Rotaract has worked with the food bank for years now, helping pack up food for Oregonians in need. But there's never been a need like this before - almost 300,000 people have filed for unemployment since mid-March and with no income or limited income comes food insecurity. Organizations like the Oregon Food Bank have struggled to meet this rising demand with fewer volunteers and updated sanitation practices to keep everyone healthy and stop the spread.

There are also so many smaller organizations that can also use our support - Hunger Fighters Oregon here in Lake Oswego was started by local students to fight hunger in our own community by providing food and basic sanitation items. Many students struggle with food insecurity with schools closed right now, when they may rely on free or reduced meals during the school year.

Our donations of money or food - and volunteer work if you're healthy and it's safe to do so! - are needed more than ever for organizations like these. The world is full of fear right now, worrying about how to afford groceries to feed your family doesn't need to be one more thing to stress about.

To learn more about either of these organizations please check out their websites: https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/ and https://www.hungerfightersoregon.org/
