Deputy Sheriff Katherine Frank succumbed to injuries resulting from a shooting near the 2900 block of South Keyrell Drive in Sioux Falls, three days prior.
On October 9, around 7:30 pm, deputies arrived at the home to serve a mental illness hold. The man went inside his home while deputies stayed in the entryway. When the man returned, he had a handgun and shot at deputies, who returned fire. Deputy Frank and the subject were struck.
Emergency aid was administered at the scene, and Deputy Frank was transported to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her passing three days later. Deputy Frank donated her organs in her final act of service.
The suspect was also treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital. He has been charged with three counts of attempted first‑degree murder of a law enforcement officer- premeditation, and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Deputy Frank had served with the Minnehaha Sheriff's Office for nearly two and a half years and had previously served for two years with the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Survivors include five siblings, parents, grandparents, and boyfriend.
