National EMS Week, observed May 17-23, 2026, is a time to honor the commitment, sacrifice, and vital service of EMS professionals. These dedicated individuals respond anytime, day or night, to help neighbors, families, friends, and entire communities in their greatest moments of need. Much of their work begins without warning. With every 9-1-1 call, a team assembles, including nights, holidays, and weekends, ensuring round-the-clock coverage. While some communities have seen volunteer numbers decrease, leading to greater dependence on mutual aid, the Town of Waterford benefits from the Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. (WAS), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) delivering fully paid EMS coverage 24 hours a day, at no cost to the town. Once WAS has committed all staffed ambulances, a callback system, proven to be 93% effective, quickly fills additional ambulances, reducing the need to rely on neighboring towns so they can protect their own communities.

This year, the theme of EMS week is “Improving Outcomes, Together”. The Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. recognizes that emergency medical services may not be suited for everyone. Yet, your support for your local EMS remains vital. Our 2026 Waterford Ambulance Fundraising event is now underway, and mailers have been sent to all Waterford residents and businesses to help sustain our high standards by supporting equipment maintenance and replacement. The Waterford Ambulance Support Team comprises 50 dedicated people who provide high-quality, life-saving care, with a focus on patients. Yesterday, we had the honor of awarding some of our team members with the Waterford Ambulance Service Life-Saving Award.

On March 16, 2026, at approximately 8:30 in the morning, a 911 call was received for a person trapped at a local business. Waterford Fire Department, Waterford Police Department, and Waterford Ambulance Service were all dispatched to this call. Upon initial arrival, it was confirmed that a person was trapped and quickly freed. CPR was immediately started and upon the arrival of our crew, they found a male unconscious. CPR was continued until pulses were regained. The patient was transported to a local hospital, and has made a full recovery with no lasting effects.

The Town of Waterford recognized all first responders involved in this call. Each organization provided their own recognition for their involved team members.

EMTs Leah and Nate were both awarded the Waterford Ambulance Service LifeSaving Award, which will be displayed on their uniforms. This award is earned when team members go above and beyond the call of duty, and their actions have made a significant and lasting impact. Their actions also strengthen and promote our mission statement. Our team’s mission is to provide prompt, effective, and high-quality emergency care to the Waterford community while prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of all individuals.

We congratulate Leah and Nate, as well as members of the Waterford Fire Department, Waterford Police Department, and the Waterford dispatchers all involved in this call.

We wanted to take a moment to give a final send off to the old W-66. In our mission to provide the best possible care to the Town of Waterford, we made the decision to retire W-66 as it had reached the end of its serviceable lifespan as an emergency vehicle. W-66 served the Waterford community from 2020-2025; initially as a Supervisor Vehicle, and most recently as a Quick Response Vehicle. As a Quick Response Vehicle, W-66 served a variety of roles such as responding to General Tones, bringing additional manpower to high acuity scenes, facilitating crew swaps, as well as providing standby coverages for events here in town. Through generous donations from the community, we have since replaced the Ford Explorer with a 2023 Dodge Durango which will continue the previous W-66’s mission of serving the community as another Quick Response Vehicle.

But what did we do with the old W-66? We’re glad you asked! Since the new W-66 was replaced using donation funds, we felt it was only fitting that we pay that generosity forward by donating the retired vehicle to Make-A-Wish Connecticut, the CT chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Today, Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. (WAS) was pleased to witness one of our own team members being awarded the PECC (Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator) of the year for 2026. This is an award that is given by the CT EMS for Children State Partnership Program, who after receiving nominations had chosen Jawal Hage, RN, EMT, for her hard work and dedication towards the education & emergency treatment of pediatric patients. As a PECC, Jawal works diligently as a resource bridging the gap between EMS and the ED, enhancing pediatric readiness by ensuring that staff are trained, equipment is appropriate, and protocols are being followed effectively.

Not only is Jawal an Emergency Department RN and an active WAS EMT, she is also working towards obtaining her Family Nurse Practitioner degree.

WAS is honored to have such a dedicated, hard-working member of our team. Jawal is someone who is eager to educate her fellow team members ensuring they have the information and tools required to provide the highest quality patient care possible.

We are so proud of you, Jawal! You continue to raise the WAS standard, both at our service and within the Emergency Department.

Happy Tuesday, Waterford! We hope everyone is staying warm and safe 💙

During the recent storm, to ensure our community remained safe, the Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. (WAS) staff deployed a total of five (5) ambulances. These ambulances were staffed throughout the Town of Waterford, with one (1) ambulance each at Cohanzie and Quaker Hill Fire Departments, and three (3) additional units staffed from WAS Base at 454 Boston Post Road. In addition to our regular staffing, the team provided over 100 hours of extra coverage. All calls for service were supported by the Waterford Fire Department (WFD), which ensured our crew and patients were safely extricated to the ambulances.

The WAS would like to thank the team for ensuring our community remained safe throughout the weather event. We understand the sacrifices you made to your own family.

A total of 15 responses were handled during the storm.

We would like to thank the Town of Waterford Public Works and WFD for this assistance during the storm, which ensured we could respond to all requests for medical aid!

Given the large amount of snow this storm has brought to our community, we kindly ask everyone to prioritize safety over the next few days as we continue to handle calls in town, since the roadways are narrowed by the snow. If possible, please keep pathways to our doorways free of ice to make it easier for our crews to access you and your loved ones.

Good morning,
With the impending storm, we have just a few items to keep in mind. Fire hydrants, if you could help out and clear 3 feet around the fire hydrants near your house. Next, keep the exhausts to your furnace, dryers and generators clear. And please stay off the roads. We have extra firefighters on duty for the storm starting this evening, and are prepared to respond in an emergency.

Happy Saturday!

This past week crew members Anna, Mariaha, Jason, Giuseppe, and Mark teamed up with Sonia, the Quaker Hill School Nurse, to teach the QH 5th-grade class hands-only CPR. We did this as part of Heart Month, and the Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. (WAS) donated several CPR manikins to the school, which were used to train students. Each student learned the key warning signs of a heart attack and how to perform hands-only CPR. After a lecture, they practiced their skills and then took a test on AHA Feedback-approved manikins, and everyone passed!

We would like to thank the QH School for teaching such an essential course to their students and for allowing the Waterford Ambulance Service, Inc. (WAS) to be part of this event. Congratulations to each one of the students for learning this skill!
