LULAC We are a passionate community of volunteers, local leaders, and partners who work to empower Latinos

The LULAC National page was created as an informational resource for updates from the LULAC National Office on events and Latino policy priorities. Our members are passionate about the issues affecting their communities and states, and we encourage them to share their opinions on the page. To ensure respectful dialogue on this page, the following guidelines must be observed:

• Comments should be respectful. It is fine to disagree, but please do so in a way that does not resort to attacking another user or using inappropriate language
• Comments must be relevant to the post.
• Comments must refrain from spreading false information.
• Spam posts that are promoting products or services are prohibited.
• LULAC is a nonpartisan organization and comments should not contain campaign signage. It is fine to state support for a candidate’s policy on a certain issue, but the LULAC page cannot be used as a campaign tool. Comments will be removed if:

Rose Ferreira grew up in the Dominican Republic looking up at the moon. In the U.S. she faced homelessness, a language barrier and countless other obstacles. She made it to NASA anyway. Then got cut during the DOGE era.

An independent federal government watchdog released a report earlier this week recommending ICE officers wear automatically activating body cameras. They say without them, there’s no way to tell if ICE officers are turning on those cameras. But DHS is ignoring the recommendation.

Undocumented students can study at California’s public colleges. Should they be able to work there too?
State lawmakers said yes. Governor Newsom said no. On September 20, he vetoed Assembly Bill 713, the Opportunity for All Act. It’s the second time he’s vetoed a version of this bill.

DHS wants colleges to pay $70,000 per international student to let them work in the U.S. The proposed rule targets Optional Practical Training, or OPT. Schools would pay $70,000 for a student’s first OPT and $30,000 for each one after that. DHS says it’s about fraud and protecting American workers. It’s not final. Comments are open through Nov. 9 at regulations.gov.

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home as part of an “ongoing federal investigation.” Omar and President Trump have been beefing the last several years, but searches of lawmakers’ homes could be part of a bigger pattern from previous federal investigations and surveillance.

You might’ve already seen this Oct. 7th NJ video on your feed this past week. An undocumented man is being detained while crying children attempt to release him from the agent's hold. Bystanders get involved to remove the children from the altercation.

El Grito hasn’t confirmed the kids' whereabouts, whether the person detained was the children’s parent, or their only guardian.

A NYC community organizer says the shooting was “devastating, but not surprising,” pointing to past violence involving federal immigration agents. They say the trauma goes beyond one person or family and affects communities across the city.

New York State Assembly Member Manny De Los Santos represents the 72nd Assembly District. It includes the neighborhoods of Inwood, Washington Heights, and Marble Hill, where yesterday’s ICE shooting happened. He told us about the community he serves and put out a call to any legal professionals who would like to help his constituents to come to his office on 210 Sherman Ave, NYC, or call 212-544-2278.

A federal judge temporarily blocked the deportation of Oscar Bergal, the man shot by an ICE agent in NYC. He also cannot be moved outside the Eastern District of New York as his case moves forward.

The manager of the bodega that’s just in front of where yesterday’s ICE shooting happened in New York City spoke to El Grito. Ruth Hilario says people are scared because nothing like this has ever happened before. She adds that her community is made up of hardworking immigrants and agents should not have shot with a child so close by.
