What does support look like for an emerging researcher?

For Hiba Ibrahim, a past Marjorie Boulton Fellow, it meant more than funding.

Hiba's doctoral research explored experiences of culture and interculturality in lingua franca virtual exchange between university students in Canada and Jordan, work that contributes to a deeper understanding of communication across cultures.

Reflecting on her experience, Hiba shared:

"What I appreciated the most is the collegial support I received from fellow scholars when I was invited by the fellowship program to present my research right before finishing my dissertation. The thoughtful questions and enlightening comments helped me a lot in preparing for my defense and think more deeply about some of my research components."

We're proud to see Hiba's continued success as an Assistant Professor in the English Language and Translation Department at Applied Science Private University in Amman, Jordan.

Meet our 2026 Marjorie Boulton Fellow, Dr. Lauren "Ren" Salig!

Dr. Salig is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, who holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science from the University of Maryland. Starting in August 2026, she will be an Assistant Professor of Psychology at The College of New Jersey.

Working at the intersection of psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience, Dr. Salig studies how variation in language contexts and experiences affects language processing and cognition.

With the support of the Marjorie Boulton Fellowship, Dr. Salig will continue to evaluate how different language contexts affect bilinguals’ learning and attention, working to better inform policies that can best support students in educational settings.

Congratulations, Lauren! We look forward to seeing where your research leads.

Introducing the Charles Power Grant for Archival Research

The Esperantic Studies Foundation is proud to announce the Charles Power (Karl Pov) Grant for Archival Research, honoring the life and legacy of Charles Power (1951–2025), a dedicated Esperantist, writer, translator, and lifelong advocate for the international language.

After discovering Esperanto in 1970, Charles devoted decades to strengthening the movement through teaching, writing, organizing, and preserving its rich literary and historical heritage. His generosity, scholarship, and passion continue to inspire the Esperanto community.

The Charles Power Grant supports archival research in Esperanto and interlinguistics, helping researchers explore both specialized Esperanto collections and broader archives.

Open to applicants of all nationalities
Annual grant: USD $3,000

Applications are evaluated based on the significance and originality of the proposed research, the applicant's preparation, and the potential to make a meaningful scholarly or public contribution.
