As extreme wildfires have burned across North America and smoke has heavily impacted communities in the northern US, agricultural workers across the country have continued to show up and do the essential work of harvesting our food.

Heat and smoke don’t stop the harvest. The work continues, even in some of the toughest conditions.

NAFHSA recognizes the incredible resilience, strength, and dedication of agricultural workers who labor through extreme weather to keep America fed. We also extend our gratitude to the organizations working alongside them, providing essential supplies and resources to help protect workers from the heat and smoke.

In a special moment during their MSHS center visit, our 2026 NAFHSA Summer Interns found themselves standing before current MSHS children singing one of the most iconic childhood songs: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes 💚

This video captures the heart of Migrant and Seasonal Head Start—where every journey begins and where it can lead. MSHS nurtures the growth and potential of every child from agricultural families, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Years later, our Summer Internship Program welcomes many of those same children back as college students, reconnecting them with their roots while giving them one final push toward their careers and future aspirations.

We are incredibly proud of how much our interns have grown this summer, and we can’t wait to see where their journeys take them next 💫

⚜️ Introducing Freddy Bautista-Molina ⚜️

Freddy is a rising junior at Cornell University pursuing a degree in Applied Economics & Management with a concentration in Finance. Freddy is an alum of Grow Early Learning’s Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program, where he attended from ages 0–5. Some of his favorite memories were simply playing outside with friends.

This summer, Freddy is interning with the U.S. Department of Energy, where he has enjoyed getting to know the people around him and learning about their diverse backgrounds and interests ✨

Reflecting on his journey, Freddy shares:
“I have had great experiences so far in life, and a lot of what I’m doing now—and what I’ll be doing next summer—is a result of those who have supported me in some way or another.”

Introducing Lizet Renteria Romero 🌟

Lizet is a former E Center MSHS student who attended from infancy until age 4. The classroom was a second home to her, where the teachers who played a crucial role in her early development still cheer her on today.

“The most memorable part of MSHS for me was doing educational activities that have helped me advance in school. I still remember playing with all the students and learning with the teachers. To this day, I still have strong friendships with students that attended MSHS with me from an infant age. My overall favorite part of attending MSHS was playing with shaving cream — I loved the smell and it’s something I miss doing.”

Fast forward and Lizet is now a sophomore at the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in Public Health. This summer, she’s interning with UnidosUS where she’s hoping to grow both personally and professionally by stepping out of her comfort zone and learning from others.

“I am looking forward to making lots of memories with my cohort and visiting all the cool places my mother once visited 7 years ago with the same organization.”
