Despite a change in leadership, the Fed decided not to change interest rates at its June meeting yesterday. The decision came as inflation remains elevated, jumping above 4% last month for the first time since 2023, and energy prices continue to climb.

Despite a change in leadership, the Federal Reserve decided not to change interest rates at the June Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting Wednesday. It was the fourth consecutive meeting in which the short-term federal funds rate stayed the same at a top rate of 3.75%.

More on the disappointing starts report: "Elevated mortgage rates, affordability challenges and cautious buyers continue to weigh on demand for new homes. Home builders are offering incentives and cutting prices."

Overall housing starts decreased 15.4% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.18 million units, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Housing starts plummeted 15.4% in May to an annualized rate of 1.117 million, 8.7% lower than a year ago. Single-family home starts slipped 1.9% to an annualized rate of 882,000, 6.7% lower than a year ago. Home building permits were flat in May.
