Our IT guy. ❤️
There’s a stereotype about IT people. They speak in acronyms and communicate in the language of servers, systems, protocols, and approximately 49 words the rest of us have never heard before. Their emails can make you feel like you’ve just been handed a technical manual.
Peter Caggiano certainly knew how to speak IT. 😂
For almost a decade, Peter shepherded Population Connection through passwords, platforms, systems, security protocols, tech processes, and all the other things most of us were perfectly happy to pretend we understood.
He onboarded us. Kept us connected. Made us watch those very serious internet safety trainings, including the ones featuring presenters who enthusiastically declared an “ex-shellent answer.” You know the ones.
But then came June. At our staff retreat, we got to hang out with Peter outside the usual IT universe and discovered something that completely blew the stereotype out of the water.
Peter was FUNNY.
Not mildly amusing. Not “ha-ha, good one, Peter.” We mean, he literally made some of us laugh our pants off.
Who knew that the man who communicated like he had eaten robots and PhDs for breakfast had the soul of your favorite comedian hiding underneath it all?
And that’s what makes this so surreal.
Just three months ago, Peter was beaming, making us laugh, and reminding us that there was a whole person behind the IT title, the technical expertise, and the endless stream of systems we relied on him to keep running.
Now, he’s gone.
Damn disease. Damn death.
Peter, thank you for everything you did to keep Population Connection running, and for the laughs we got to discover along the way. Thank you for your dedication, hard work, patience, and for making sure we had what we needed to do ours.
We’ll miss your expertise.
We’ll miss your dry delivery.
We’ll miss knowing there was someone who actually understood how all of this stuff worked.
And, perhaps most of all, we’ll miss the unexpectedly hilarious Peter we got to know a little better at the very end.
Rest well, Peter. Our thoughts are with your family and friends. And please know that somewhere, someone is probably clicking “Forgot Password” and wishing you were here to fix it. And you know what? I meant to tell you about the weird sound my computer is making. Can you hear it from up there?
