Today, we are proud to release the third edition of our landmark report “Same-Gender Marriage and Religious Freedom."

First published in 2009 and then again in 2013, this report makes the case that the United States can respect both civil marriage equality and religious freedom. It was the result of years of dialogue with affirming and non-affirming religious leaders.

Interfaith Alliance argued that marriage equality would not inhibit religious freedom rights. That thesis was proven correct by the evidence we have since marriage equality became the law of the land in 2015. The fears of clergy being forced to officiate same-gender weddings or churches closing out of fear never materialized. Instead, LGBTQ freedom and religious freedom have both been strengthened by marriage equality. Houses of worship and clergy that choose to officiate same-gender weddings can – and that decision is respected by the civil authorities. And nobody is forced to celebrate marriages that betray their own theological beliefs.

Happy Pride!

Let's all take a page from Catholic Iowa State Senator Tony Bisignano and speak out for trans and LGBTQ+ rights, not in spite of our religious beliefs but because of them! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Back in 2025, Sen. Bisignano gave this rousing speech calling out his fellow Christians in the Iowa state house who not only voted for an anti-trans bill but who refused to engage in debate over the impact the legislation would have on trans Iowans and their families.

It's exactly the energy we need from religious Americans all month long!
