Home Builders Institute - HBI

Home Builders Institute - HBI Home Builders Institute (HBI) is the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of trade skills training & education for the building industry.

We change lives by educating, inspiring, and preparing individuals for careers in the building industry. HBI is a national leader for career training in the building industry. Through certification programs, mentoring, pre-apprenticeships and job placement services, HBI prepares its students--including at-risk and underserved populations such as youth, veterans, ex-offenders and displaced workers-

-with the skills and experience they need for successful careers in the building industry. HBI program graduates are qualified to work across many different sectors of the construction industry, giving businesses a competitive edge when hiring new workers. The placement rate for graduates nationwide regularly exceeds 80 percent. HBI training programs do more than just provide job skills; they build character and self-esteem, providing students with the interpersonal skills they need to succeed on the job and in life. This gives graduates a solid foundation for becoming valuable members of their communities and responsible citizens. HBI works in partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in carrying out its various workforce development initiatives. HBI uses a dynamic national skills training model that can be customized to meet local workforce needs in communities nationwide. By facilitating partnerships within these communities, HBI helps them build a solid foundation for economic development and employment growth. HBI helps federal officials and other policymakers understand the importance of creating a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand for qualified workers in the building industry. It also assists state and local workforce boards, state departments of of corrections and education, and state and local home builders associations to further their goals by providing workers with valuable job skills that match local workforce needs.

As part of Military Appreciation Month, we’re proud to spotlight Nicholas Hall, a graduate of HBI’s Fort Hood Career Center program 🇺🇸

Before enrolling in HBI, Nicholas served as an 11B Infantryman in the U.S. Army, where he developed leadership skills, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure. Looking for a hands-on career after transitioning from military service, he found a new opportunity through HBI’s construction and electrical training programs.

Nicholas quickly stood out for his leadership abilities and strong technical understanding, which helped him secure a position as an Assistant Project Manager at Perkins Electrical. He now plans to continue growing within the trades and pursue a future leadership role in the industry.

💬 “HBI helped me by providing a general knowledge base of construction and electrical work, which provided me with what I needed to secure my job.”

Concrete skills are being built from the ground up 🔨

Norfolk carpentry students got outside and got their hands dirty while learning how to set and mix concrete in a real training environment. From measuring the right ratios to prepping surfaces and safely pouring material, this is the kind of experience that turns lessons into real-world skills.

There’s no better way to learn the trades than by actually doing the work and these students are putting in the effort every step of the way 👏

Through HBI’s DoD SkillBridge program, service members, veterans, and dependents are getting the chance to learn new skills, work with their hands, and build a path into the trades!

For Military Appreciation Month, we’re proud to highlight Daniya Jones and her journey through HBI’s Military Services pre-apprenticeship program in Norfolk, VA 🇺🇸⚡

Inspired by her father, a Navy veteran and skilled craftsman, Daniya developed a passion for hands-on work and came to HBI to explore a future in the trades. During her training, she discovered her true passion in electrical work and quickly turned that passion into a career.

Just one month after graduating, Daniya was hired by Brite Electric, where her skills and strong work ethic quickly earned the trust of her team.

HBI’s Military Services Program helps active-duty service members, veterans, military spouses, and dependents transition into stable, high-growth careers in the skilled trades ⚒

Through partnerships like DoD SkillBridge, participants receive hands-on construction training, industry-recognized certifications, direct employer connections, and job placement support.

All 10 HBI Department of Defense SkillBridge sites offer a 12-week carpentry and electrical program, including locations at Ft. Bragg, Ft. Campbell, Ft. Carson, Camp Pendleton, Norfolk Career Center, Jacksonville Career Center, and more. Jacksonville also offers a 12-week HVAC program.

Most importantly, this is not theoretical learning. Students gain real jobsite experience that leads directly to employment opportunities in the construction industry.

For Military Appreciation Month, we’re proud to share the story of Bryan Albarado, an Army veteran who transitioned into the skilled trades through HBI’s Carpentry program at Ft. Liberty. 🇺🇸🔨

After four years in the Army, including deployment during the Kabul evacuation in Afghanistan, Bryan gained hands-on experience through HBI and Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, building the skills that helped launch his career in construction and disaster recovery. Today, he works with Habitat for Humanity’s Disaster Recovery division and continues helping support new HBI students as they transition out of military service.

💬 "HBI means so much to me. I am very blessed to be a part of the HBI family and I will
continue to be an advocate for HBI for many years to come."
