2026年8月21日、国際文化会館にて、第30期マンスフィールド・フェロー8名を対象としたオリエンテーションを開催しました。

フェローたちは、石川県での7週間にわたる集中日本語研修を終え、東京へ戻ったばかり。9月から始まる日本政府各省庁での研修を前に、この日は、行政機関の中で働き、学ぶための心構えや、研修をより実りあるものにするための準備を行いました。

ゲストスピーカーにはケビン・メア（Kevin Maher）氏を迎え、在日米国大使館勤務時代にマイク・マンスフィールド駐日米国大使のもとで働いた経験や当時の思い出を交えながら、日米関係における信頼と人と人とのつながりの大切さについてお話しいただきました。

8名のフェローは、いよいよ9月から日本政府各省庁で本格的な研修をスタートします。日本の同僚とともに働きながら、日本への理解をさらに深め、長く続く信頼関係を築いていくことを期待しています。

Mansfield Fellows Take the Next Step— Preparing for Their Japanese Government Placements

On August 21, 2026, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation held an orientation at the International House of Japan for the eight members of the 30th class of Mansfield Fellows.

The Fellows had just returned to Tokyo after completing seven weeks of intensive Japanese-language training in Ishikawa Prefecture. Ahead of their placements in Japanese government ministries and agencies beginning in September, the orientation focused on preparing them for the next stage of the Fellowship.

Guest speaker Kevin Maher shared reflections from his time serving at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo under Ambassador Mike Mansfield, including memories of Ambassador Mansfield and lessons from his experience in U.S.-Japan relations. He spoke to the Fellows about the importance of trust and personal relationships in building strong and lasting ties between the United States and Japan.

In September, the eight Fellows will begin their placements in Japanese government ministries and agencies, working alongside their Japanese colleagues and deepening their understanding of Japan from within.

We wish them every success as they embark on this important next stage of their Fellowship.

創薬の未来を担う研究者が米国視察に向けて始動！
8月6日、国際文化会館（東京・六本木）にて、マンスフィールド-PhRMA研究者プログラム第12期の渡米前オリエンテーションを実施しました。9月に2週間の米国スタディツアーに参加する12期のメンバーには、創薬分野で活躍する研究者8名に加え、AMED、PMDA、経済産業省からのオブザーバー3名が含まれます。
参加者それぞれの研究テーマや今後の抱負についての自己紹介が英語で行われた後、PhRMAの大塚具幸様よりPhRMAの取り組みについてのご説明、10期のAMEDオブザーバーの吉田愛様より日本のトランスレーショナルリサーチのご紹介、同じく10期のアラムナイである岡﨑敦子先生から体験談のお話をいただき、渡米への期待が高まる充実した一日となりました。
オリエンテーション後の歓迎ディナーでは、他期のアラムナイも参加し、和やかな雰囲気の中で交流を深めました。
9月の訪米に向けて、参加者の皆様の益々のご活躍を期待しています！

Researchers Shaping the Future of Drug Discovery Head Toward Their U.S. Study Tour!
On August 6, the Mansfield-PhRMA Research Scholars Program held its pre-departure orientation for Cohort 12 at the International House of Japan in Roppongi, Tokyo. Cohort 12, who will take part in a two-week U.S. study tour in September, includes eight researchers active in the field of drug discovery, along with three observers from AMED, PMDA, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

Following self-introductions given in English by each participant about their research and future goals, Mr. Tomoyuki Otsuka of PhRMA gave a presentation on PhRMA's work, Cohort 10 AMED observer Dr. Ai Yoshida introduced translational research in Japan, and Cohort 10 alumna Dr. Atsuko Okazaki shared her own experience in the program. It made for a full day that left participants looking forward to their upcoming trip to the United States.

At the welcome dinner following the orientation, alumni from other cohorts also joined, and everyone enjoyed getting to know one another in a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

7月4日、アメリカ独立記念日のこの日、8名の第30期マンスフィールド・フェローが金沢に到着しました。

到着後は、石川県国際交流協会（IFIE）によるオリエンテーションに参加。これから始まる7週間の研修スケジュールや生活上の注意点、ホームステイに関するガイドラインなど、金沢での新生活に向けた準備を行いました。

また、滞在中に市内の博物館や美術館、文化施設などを利用できる「IJSPパス」も配布され、フェローたちは金沢での文化体験への期待を膨らませていました。

オリエンテーション後には、いよいよホストファミリーとの対面式。温かい歓迎を受け、それまで緊張していたフェローたちにも笑顔が広がりました。その後はホストファミリーとともに金沢駅へ向かい、通学用パスを購入するなど、新生活がいよいよスタートしました。

マンスフィールド・フェローシップ・プログラムを長年支えてくださっている石川県の皆様、石川県国際交流協会（IFIE）の皆様、そしてホストファミリーの皆様の温かいご支援に、心より感謝申し上げます。

The 30th Mansfield Fellows Arrive in Kanazawa — A Seven-Week Training Program Begins!

On July 4, U.S. Independence Day, eight members of the 30th Mansfield Fellowship Program arrived in Kanazawa to begin the next stage of their fellowship.

Upon arrival, the Fellows participated in an orientation organized by the Ishikawa Foundation for International Exchange (IFIE). They received an overview of the seven-week training program, practical guidance for daily life, and information about their upcoming homestays.

The Fellows also received an IJSP Pass, which provides complimentary admission to museums, art museums, and cultural facilities throughout Kanazawa, adding to their excitement about experiencing the city's rich history and culture.

Following the orientation, the Fellows met their host families for the first time. The warm welcome quickly eased any nervousness, and together they headed to Kanazawa Station to purchase commuter passes and begin their new lives in Japan.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners in Ishikawa Prefecture, the Ishikawa Foundation for International Exchange (IFIE), and all of the host families whose generous support makes this program possible.

「マンスフィールド−PhRMA研究者プログラム」初の同窓会を開催しました！
東京大学を会場に行われた同窓会イベントにはゲストスピーカーとして塩崎恭久元厚生労働大臣をお迎えし、「イノベーションパワーの復活こそ、日本再生の鍵」をテーマにご講演いただきました。

会場には、1期から11期までの同窓生約40名が参加。講演後のレセプションでは、塩崎先生との交流に加え、期を超えた同窓生同士の交流も深まり、大変有意義なひとときとなりました。

本プログラムは、PhRMAのご支援のもと、日本の若手・中堅研究者を米国へ派遣し、医薬品研究開発や保健医療政策などについて学ぶ機会を提供するものです。

今年9月には、第12期に選ばれた日本の研究者たちが米国へ向かいます。マンスフィールド財団は、今後も同窓生同士のつながりをさらに深める機会を作っていきたいと思います。　 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 First Alumni Reunion for the Mansfield–PhRMA Research Scholars Program!

At the alumni reunion held at the University of Tokyo, we were honored to welcome former Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Yasuhisa Shiozaki as our guest speaker. He delivered a lecture titled "Reviving the Power of Innovation: The Key to Japan's Renewal."

Nearly 40 alumni from Cohorts 1 through 11 attended the event. During the reception following the lecture, alumni had the opportunity to interact with former Minister Shiozaki while also deepening connections across cohorts, making it a truly meaningful gathering.

Supported by PhRMA, the Mansfield-PhRMA Research Scholars Program provides opportunities for early- and mid-career Japanese researchers to study pharmaceutical R&D, health policy, and related fields in the United States.

This September, the newly selected Cohort 12 Research Scholars will travel to the United States. The Mansfield Foundation looks forward to creating more opportunities to strengthen connections across our alumni community.

オリエンテーション３日目は5名のマンスフィールド・フェローシップ同窓生をお招きし、30期フェローに向けてご自身の経験や学びを語っていただきました。

同窓生からは、フェローシップは「単なるキャリア形成の機会ではなく、人生を豊かにする経験であること」、そして「日本で出会う人々との絆こそが、このプログラムの最も大きな財産」であることが語られました。

セッション後は、30期フェローと同窓生が一緒にピザランチへ。和やかな雰囲気の中で、新しい交流が生まれる時間となりました。

30期フェローの皆さんにとって、この1年間が新たな扉を開き、人生を変えるようなかけがえのない経験となることを願っています。

Mansfield Fellowship Program – Orientation Day 3

Recently, we welcomed five Mansfield Fellowship alumni to share their experiences and reflections with the 30th class of Fellows.

The alumni emphasized that the Fellowship is not only a career-enhancing opportunity but a life-enhancing experience—and that the relationships built with people in Japan are among the program’s greatest and most lasting gifts.

After the session, the Fellows and alumni gathered for a pizza lunch, continuing the conversation in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

We hope this year will open new doors and become a truly meaningful and life-changing experience for every member of the 30th class.

マンスフィールド・フェローシップ・プログラム第30期の到着オリエンテーションを国際文化会館で開催しました。

30期という節目を迎えた今年は、米国連邦政府のさまざまな機関から派遣された8名のフェローが来日。これから約1年間、日本語研修や日本政府機関での実務研修を通じて、日本への理解を深めていきます。

到着オリエンテーションは、その第一歩。これから始まる新たな学びや出会い、そして日米の未来につながる貴重な経験への期待に満ちた時間となりました。

フェローの皆さんにとって、この1年が実り多く、かけがえのない経験となることを心から願っています。

Welcoming the 30th Class of Mansfield Fellows!

We were delighted to welcome the 30th class of Mansfield Fellows at the Arrival Orientation held at the International House of Japan.

Marking this important milestone for the program, eight U.S. federal government professionals have arrived in Japan to begin a year-long fellowship. Through intensive Japanese language training and professional placements within the Japanese government, they will deepen their understanding of Japan while building lasting relationships with their Japanese counterparts.

The Arrival Orientation marked the beginning of what we hope will be an inspiring and rewarding year filled with learning, collaboration, and meaningful cross-cultural exchange.

We wish all of our Fellows a successful and fulfilling year ahead, and we look forward to supporting them throughout their journey.

This May, MFP29 Fellow Nicole Ibrahim (FDA) spent her placement with the Japan Foundation of Medical Device Associations, meeting with four of the federation's committees on legislative affairs, international policy, clinical evaluation, and industrial strategy. With them, she discussed challenges and opportunities facing Japanese medical device manufacturers, including their engagement with the U.S. FDA, and she focused conversation on pediatric medical device development.

The placement concluded with a visit to Terumo Medical Pranex, a major clinical and engineering training facility that supports the Japanese clinical community through Emergency Department simulations, natural disaster training, medical device use training, and other hands-on educational programs.

Nicole described the placement as a rare window into Japan's medical device industry and a step toward identifying new areas for U.S.-Japan collaboration.
