Congratulations to Mansfield Alumnus Fellow John D. Hill (MFP1)!

The former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space and Missile Defense has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbons as part of the Government of Japan's 2026 Spring Conferment of Decoration on Foreign Nationals. The honor recognizes John's significant contributions to advancing U.S.-Japan security cooperation and acknowledges the lasting value of his time as a Mansfield Fellow.

In his own words:
"I was completely surprised and humbled by this honor from the Government of Japan. Certainly, my experience as a Mansfield Fellow was the foundation for my years of work on the U.S.-Japan alliance that the Government of Japan has chosen to recognize. I believe it remains just as true today as it was when Ambassador Mansfield first described the U.S.-Japan alliance as 'the most important bilateral relationship in the world, bar none.' I hope the United States government will continue to recognize the importance of the Mansfield Fellowship Program and other investments in the relationship with Japan."

A proud moment for John, for MFP1, and for the entire Mansfield community.

We're proud to share that MFP30 Fellows John Collins (USAF), Aaron Cook (DHS), Dominique Duval-Diop (DOC) and her daughter Adelina Diop, and Nell Williams (TREAS), along with Japanese language instructor Taeko Lee, volunteered at the 34th National Japan Bowl!

On April 17-18, the 34th National Japan Bowl brought around 165 top high school students from 19 schools across the country to Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington, DC. Hosted by the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, this premier competition tested students' real-world Japanese communication, kanji, culture, and history.

From checking in teams and ushering guests to running the testing rounds as room monitors and timekeepers, the Fellows lent their time and energy to an event that celebrates the future of the U.S.-Japan connection.

The Mansfield Foundation was pleased to join the 2026 Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival in Washington, DC, celebrating U.S.-Japan cultural exchange alongside friends, alumni, and partners.

Throughout the weekend, our team connected with attendees and shared Mansfield programming that showcases our work in strengthening U.S.-Japan relations. Highlights included a shamisen performance by Michiko Feehan (MFP28, FDA) with Koji Nagamura, and a performance by Program Manager Amanda Earls with the Okinawa Shinkanucha Band. We were also proud to see former intern Mary Black representing Colorado as a 2026 Cherry Blossom Princess, reflecting on her continued ties to the Mansfield community.

Thank you to all who helped make the festival such a meaningful celebration of cultural connection!

From launching rockets to shaping U.S.-Japan space cooperation, Phillip “Flex” Dobberfuh (MFP18) spent over 25 years in the U.S. Air Force and Space Force, including a decade in Japan, before retiring in 2024. Now in Tokyo, he continues advancing the U.S.-Japan relationship through the aerospace and defense industry.

Through the Mansfield Fellowship, his placements, especially with JAXA and NSPS, gave him firsthand insight into Japan’s space institutions and helped shape a career leading major Foreign Military Sales efforts and contributing to Japan’s space policy.

His takeaway? Be open to applying your skills in new ways! The Fellowship can take your career in directions you never expected.
