How can open access to research deliver greater public value, including as AI impacts how people engage with science?

This Open Access Week, take a look at what’s ahead at the 2027 AAAS Annual Meeting. “Rebuilding Trust in Science: Governing Openness, Integrity, and Public Value” will feature a session with Véronique Kiermer (PLOS), Nokuthula Mchunu, James Wilsdon and Roger Schonfeld to examine what publishers, repositories, libraries, funders, institutions should each provide — and where the boundaries of their roles should be.

One week left to apply! Calling for nominations! AAAS is thrilled to announce the topic of the third Multidisciplinary Working Group: Identifying Opportunities for Planetary Health. Planetary health has been defined as the health of human civilization and the state of the natural systems on which it depends and is a new area for discovery and collaboration. This MWG will bring together experts from many scientific disciplines to identify priority research areas in this emerging field.

The AAAS MWGs feature members across career stages and sectors who work together to address timely and high-impact issues in STEMM while advancing the strategic vision of AAAS as a multidisciplinary, inclusive, mobilized scientific community.

Nominate yourself or a colleague to serve on the next AAAS MWG. Nominations are open until 5pm ET on Monday, October 26, 2026 here: https://bit.ly/4hRnCox

You might have seen the news that Mary-Dell Chilton, creator of the first genetically modified plant, passed away in June. A Golden Goose Award winner in 2023, Chilton’s work transformed the entire agriculture industry: we have her to thank for virus-resistant potatoes, drought-tolerant sugar, and more micronutrient-rich corn. But it started off small – simply with a federal grant to research plant tumors. Read more about Chilton’s story below.

Supporting youth mental health and preventing su***de starts with research that helps us understand what works, when to intervene, and how best to reach young people.

For World Mental Health Day, we’re highlighting resources shared during a recent webinar series from the AAAS EPI Center and The Council of State Governments. Experts discussed what research tells us about recognizing and responding to mental health needs, how social media and technology can affect adolescent development, and how prevention efforts can address risk before a crisis occurs.

The series also highlighted tools and approaches that can put this research into practice, from digital mental health resources designed to reach young people where they are to community-based strategies that focus on connection, stability and support.

Today’s youth face higher rates of mental health challenges and reported suicidal thoughts than any generation in decades. The media often associates decline in youth mental health with the rise in social media and smart phone use over roughly the same period, however the science is more nuanced. ...
