⚠️ A warning worth reading.

CFFC Board Member Dave Gibson raises troubling questions about the rush to build data centers across Virginia and what communities like Fauquier could be left with if demand doesn’t live up to the hype.

Before we commit more land, infrastructure and resources, these are questions worth asking.

What happens when data centers drop their enormous power draw from the grid during a power outage? We found out in July, when the failure of a 230-kilovolt transmission line in Loudoun County caused a massive and destabilizing voltage spike that rippled from Boston to Miami to Chicago.

Big land-use decisions deserve careful scrutiny.

Ahead of Thursday’s Fauquier County Planning Commission meeting, CFFC has submitted 20 pages of formal comments on the proposed Re*****on Innovation Campus — examining the project against the County’s existing plans and policies and raising questions about its potential impacts on water, energy infrastructure, noise, conservation land and the future of Re*****on.

This is the work CFFC has done for nearly 60 years: study the details, ask the hard questions and advocate for thoughtful planning that protects what makes Fauquier special.

We encourage you to read our comments ahead of Thursday’s meeting, speak at the Planning Commission meeting or take a few minutes and send an email to the Fauquier County Planning Commission asking they recommend to the BOS to decline approval.

Gigaland has withdrawn its application, again.

The developers behind the proposed Re*****on Digital Campus, commonly known as Gigaland, have withdrawn their application from consideration by Fauquier County.

This is an important development, but history tells us that a withdrawal does not necessarily mean the end of a proposal. CFFC will continue to closely monitor this property and any future applications that may come forward.

Throughout this process, Fauquier residents have taken the time to learn about the proposal, attend public meetings, ask questions and make their voices heard. That kind of informed civic engagement matters, and it is exactly why CFFC exists.

We remain committed to keeping our members and the broader community informed about major land-use decisions that could shape Fauquier County for generations.

Less than a month before anticipated public hearings, the developers of Gigaland are withdrawing their application for the second year in a row.

Available this Thursday? Join Citizens for Fauquier County and our partners at the The Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area Association this Thursday for a special evening of music and local history.

Songs of the Civil War will feature renowned musician Bess Putnam and company performing music that inspired soldiers, comforted families, and reflected the experiences of Americans during the Civil War.

The concert will take place inside historic Warrenton Presbyterian Church, built in 1855 and itself a witness to the Civil War in Fauquier County.

New Battery Energy Storage Project Public Information Meeting! A public information meeting has been scheduled for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project on Broad Run Church Road.

🕖 7:00–8:30 p.m.
📍 Vint Hill Village Green Community Center Gymnasium

If you're interested in learning more about this proposal, this meeting is an opportunity to hear directly from the applicant and ask questions.

Some questions residents may wish to explore include:
• Is this a rezoning application requiring Board of Supervisors approval?
• If so, does the rezoning apply to the entire parcel or only the portion proposed for the facility?
• How much of the property is being leased for the project?
• How will this facility benefit Fauquier County residents?
• What fire prevention and emergency response measures are planned?
• What equipment will be used, and what are the expected impacts related to noise or emissions?
• Will the project generate local tax revenue?

CFFC encourages residents to stay informed, ask questions, and participate in the public process as proposals like this move forward.

Last night, the Fauquier County Planning Commission voted to recommend denial of the proposed Re*****on Digital Campus (Gigaland) application. We are grateful for the Commission's thoughtful, deliberative review of this proposal and for its careful consideration of the facts, the record, and the concerns raised by our community.

We also want to thank the many residents and partners who took the time to participate; those who spoke at the public hearing, submitted written comments, and shared concerns throughout this process. Your voices mattered. This recommendation reflects what meaningful public participation looks like: informed citizens, respectful dialogue, and leaders willing to carefully evaluate the evidence before them.

Over the past several weeks, residents from across Fauquier raised important questions about flooding risks, infrastructure impacts, compatibility with our Comprehensive Plan, and the long-term future of our county. Others also reminded county leaders that Fauquier is already projected to receive significant revenue from previously approved data center projects, underscoring the importance of fiscal responsibility and thoughtful stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Thank you to everyone who engaged in this process. While additional steps remain before a final decision, last night's vote demonstrated that community voices continue to play an essential role in shaping Fauquier County's future.

Tonight at 6:30, the proposed Gigaland (Re*****on Digital Campus) returns to the Fauquier County Planning Commission.

While the project has been 'repackaged', many of the same concerns remain. This public hearing is an important opportunity for the Planning Commission to hear directly from the people who will live with the impacts of this proposal.
