On this day in 1965, USAF Capt. Joe Engle flew a North American X-15 to an altitude of more than 50 miles above ground, qualifying for astronaut wings. He was selected to become a NASA astronaut the next year and is the only person to fly both the X-15 and the Space Shuttle.

𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞: June 15, 1921, Bessie Coleman made history by graduating from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and becoming the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license. After facing barriers to flight training in the United States, Coleman traveled to France to pursue her dream of aviation. Her determination helped pave the way for future generations of aviators and expanded opportunities for women and people of color in flight.
