Flooded vehicle? Here's what to do next.

If your vehicle has been affected by flooding, there are a few important steps to take to protect yourself and avoid additional damage or unexpected expenses.

1. Don't start the vehicle. Water may have entered the engine or critical electrical components. Attempting to start it could cause further damage.

2. Contact your insurance company. If you have comprehensive coverage, report the damage as soon as possible.

3. Ask about towing and rental coverage. Find out what your policy includes and make arrangements for towing to a repair shop and a rental vehicle, if covered.

4. Document the damage. Take plenty of photos before any repairs are made. Don't authorize repairs until you've spoken with your claims adjuster.

5. Coordinate towing when possible. If the vehicle is safe to leave where it is, contact your insurance company before having it towed. Police-directed towing may send it to an impound lot, potentially adding storage and release fees.

Your safety comes first. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors who may be dealing with flood-damaged vehicles.
