Gopher Tortoise Alliance is a conservation nonprofit based in Indian River County, Florida, dedicated to protecting and preserving the state’s gopher tortoises and their upland habitats. Through community outreach, education, and advocacy, we strive to inspire a deeper understanding of this ancient keystone species and the vital role it plays in our ecosystems.

We want to thank the City of Sebastian and their Natural Resources board for helping us get some signage to Hardee Park in Sebastian to help educate about our local resident native protected gopher tortoises. We had a concerned resident reach out to us and inform us that there were some concerns for safety with the gopher tortoises residing in the park. We were happy to work with the city to come up with a solution. We hope that the new sign will help educate other residences and help keep our local natives safe.

Sunday intake:
We received a call from a ranger at inlet about a small that was injured and needed help. The ranger was able to bring it to us so we could take care of it. We think it was hit by a bike or something because it’s so small that a car would’ve surely killed it. It looks like the arm is broken so we need to take it for an x-ray tomorrow at the vet. We rely solely on donations and do not get any funding from the state. Please consider donating at our website gophertortoisealliance.org

Let’s play a fun game!
Can you spot the baby gopher tortoise in the hatchling nursery?
This is a great example of how well these little ones can camouflage into their habitat. As we are in the peak of hatchling season please make sure you are careful when cleaning up yard debris and stay on marked trails when hiking and biking in nature preserves. You don’t want to accidentally step on one of these babies while working in your yard or exploring our county and state parks.

This poor tortoise got caught and chewed up by a dog. Luckily the dog’s owner found her and brought her to us.

Although the dog was not very big, she did some serious damage with multiple deep puncture wounds.

We got the the tortoise bandaged up and medicated and now we will give her time to heal.

Please keep an eye on your dogs especially if you have gopher tortoises in your area.
