From the field 🌿🪏 This Sunday, we visited Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program (WHIP) co-lead, Kris, while he showed volunteers his time-tested method for moating transplanted native seedlings to prepare them for their weekly watering. And after hearing him explain his favorite Harmon native plants, we’re starting to wonder—is Kris the Bob Ross of native habitat restoration?

WHIP runs weekly on Sunday and Monday mornings at Harmon Canyon Preserve. Join Kris and Terri as they improve habitat for native species by clicking the link in our bio.

Have you ever wanted to shred some trail but didn’t know where to start? Maybe you don’t have a bike? Or are you (and your bike) feeling a bit rusty and looking for a tune-up?

Join (and ) on a guided mountain bike ride through the rolling trails of Harmon Canyon. Need a bike? Bike Hub has got you covered. Want a quick tune-up before hitting the trails? Ditto.

This ride is open to riders of all levels, including first timers, but sorry groms, this session is for 18+ only. Stay tuned for future rides though!

Learn new skills, learn the etiquette, and most of all, learn what shralp means (tell me afterward, I don’t know).

Link for tickets in our bio. THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 7. 7:30am at the trailhead kiosk for Harmon Canyon.

An Evening with Robin Greenfield — The Year of Foraging • VLT Welcome Center • May 30, 4 - 7pm 🌱🎤

We are excited to host Robin Greenfield this upcoming Saturday, where he will share his year-long journey foraging 100% of his food. You read that right—a full year without grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, or even a garden. Hear about the individuals and organizations in our community that helped make his journey possible. Join us for a fascinating exploration of food sovereignty through the food and medicine that is growing abundantly around us.

From the field 🌿🥾🐞 VLT Preserve Docent Cherie spent some time this past weekend at Ventura Hills, where she shared information with visitors, ID’d plants and birds with iNaturalist and Merlin, and even wrote a short poem about her time spent in nature:

“It was truly a magnificent, glorious day
To the top of Bushnell, I made my way
There I saw birds, bugs, butterflies and a beautiful flower
Saw lots of people and their dogs too, as I made my way to the radio tower”

Preserve Docents spend their time on our preserves every week, sharing info and making observations to keep both visitors and VLT staff more informed. Next time you see a docent on one of our preserves, say hi! 👋
