A technology is a designed tool that reliably produces an effect in the world.
A wheel converts force into motion, reliably, across cultures, across millennia. By that same definition, music is a technology because it reliably produces specific, measurable, reproducible effects on the human nervous system, and it does this too consistently across every human culture ever studied to be an accident.
A few concrete mechanisms:
Rhythm entrains the body.
A steady beat can pull your heart rate, breathing, and even walking gait into sync with it, a real physiological phenomenon called entrainment. It’s why gait-training with rhythm helps Parkinson’s patients walk more steadily, and why a workout playlist changes your actual pace, not just your mood about your pace.
Music is a dosable intervention.
Certain tempos and structures reliably lower cortisol. Certain harmonic patterns reliably trigger dopamine release in the brain’s reward pathway, the same pathway food and connection use. This is why music therapists can select music the way a physician selects a drug, for a specific physiological target, with predictable results.
It synchronizes groups, not just individuals.
When people sing or drum together, their heart rates and even brainwaves can move toward alignment. That’s not metaphorical bonding, it’s bodies literally coordinating in real time through sound.
It’s been engineered for effect for as long as we have evidence of humans at all.
Bone flutes 40,000 years old. Every culture independently developed lullabies with nearly identical acoustic features, soft, slow, descending, because those features reliably soothe infants. Nobody had to teach every isolated culture on Earth the same trick. The trick works because of how ears, brainstems, and nervous systems are built, so people converged on it independently, the way many cultures independently invented the wheel or the bow.
So it’s a technology in the strict sense: a repeatable method, refined over tens of thousands of years, for producing a specific effect in the body and brain, using sound as the delivery mechanism.
