NAWCC Chapter 190 - Clocks and Watches

NAWCC Chapter 190 - Clocks and Watches Our passion is the art, science, and history of time. Chapter 190 represents the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors in Southern California.

Welcome to Chapter 190 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC). We are a relatively new chapter, receiving our charter in September 2006. Our chapter serves the Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, but our membership includes members from all over Southern California, and as far away as Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, and Washington. When we initially set up our cha

pter, we decided that it would be dedicated to education, communication, and the enjoyment of our members. Our founding Board of Directors set the ground rules to accomplish this objective, and every Board of Directors since has continued this effort. To achieve our goals, we established a website that is keep current, created an informative newsletter, offer various horology related workshops, provide free workshops, and live programs at our monthly meetings. Our chapter is also involved in the community. Our members have voluntarily provided their time and expertise to various projects. For example; we restored a 1905 Seth Thomas tower clock in the Odd Fellows lodge in Santa Paula, as well as the tower clock in the Santa Barbara courthouse. We also offer horology related programs to nonprofit organizations. All free of charge. Our success is due primarily to an extraordinary and dedicated Board of Directors. Even though some of the faces may change from time to time, the founding principles do not. I have been involved with many nonprofit organizations, and this is, by far, the most dedicated and selfless group of people that I have ever worked with. There is an old saying, "if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right." If our chapter had a slogan, it would probably be, "Do it right". I invite you to visit with us at one of our meetings. (The third Sunday of each month.) If you collect old clocks or watches, or just have a curiosity about them, stop by and see what we're all about. We will even buy you lunch.

Terrific meeting yesterday everyone!

Attendance was great with 30 members and 6 guests joining us.

Following our Members’ Mart and lunch, First Vice President Ron Maricich introduced our many guests.

Eric Schott gave the program, Russian Watches – An Enthusiasts Overview and Perspective. He gave the history of the Russian watch factories. He showed us many examples of watches from those factories, including those in his personal collection. He noted how affordable many of these watches are, and that parts are available, even in these uncertain days. One factory that is still in business is Roketa, which was founded in 1721, in St. Petersburg. Vostec and Luch are still in business as well.

As always, door prize drawings followed our program. The Grand Prize clock was donated to the Chapter by a member of the public. It was a German R & A clock.

Look for our next meeting January 15, 2023. The program for that meeting will be an overview of the NAWCC Symposium, held in New York City.

Had a wonderful time in New York City at the NAWCC Symposium, "Horology's Great Collectors." The special Metropolitan Museum of Art tour was outstanding. And, it was great to see old friends as well as to make new ones. The photo shows one of my favorites in the Museum's collection. The case is made from Meissen porcelain, and it is from the J.P. Morgan collection.

Our program will be given by Alan Bloore entitled “Synchronized clock systems powered by Vintage Electro-mechanical clocks." Following the program, we have door prize drawings.

For month's Grand Prize we will have another Grand Prize Clock this one donated by Dave Coatsworth. It is a “Barr electro-mechanical clock with an original glass dome.” It is about 14 inches high including the dome. Runs on 3 ‘D-cell’ batteries. A solenoid nudges the pendulum about every 25 swings to keep the clock running.” It runs well and keeps good time.

Our September meeting began with an outstanding Members’ Mart. One of our members is helping the widow of a fellow NAWCC member sell her late husband’s clocks. Many went to new homes. After lunch, the program was by Dave Coatsworth on collecting Pocket Watches. Door prizes were given followed by the selection of the Grand Prize clock, this one donated by a non-member to Robert Gary. This month’s clock was a Sessions “Gallery” Oak Art Deco wall clock, time only, circa 1930, 16 inches square. The clock was won by members Michael Racine and Barbara Turner.
