October 23, 1983. Beirut, Lebanon.
Forty-three years ago today, a Sunday morning became a day our nation must never forget.
At approximately 6:22 a.m., a terrorist drove an explosives-laden truck into the American barracks at Beirut International Airport. The blast collapsed the building and claimed 241 American service members:
220 Marines.
18 Sailors.
3 Soldiers.
They were serving as part of a multinational peacekeeping force in a country torn by civil war. The bombing brought the Marine Corps its deadliest single day since Iwo Jima.
Minutes later, another bombing killed 58 French paratroopers at their barracks. We remember their sacrifice, too.
But behind those numbers were names. Behind every name was a family, a hometown, a story, and a future that would never unfold.
For their families and those who survived, Beirut has never been just a chapter in a history book. They have carried that morning with them for 43 years.
Today, we honor the fallen. We remember the wounded and the survivors. We recognize the rescuers who searched the shattered concrete for their brothers, and the medical teams who fought to save lives.
As a retired Sailor, I believe our responsibility to those who served continues long after the headlines fade. We owe them remembrance, and we owe the next generation the truth about their service and sacrifice.
Please take a moment today. Say a prayer for these men and their families. Tell someone why October 23 matters.
To our Beirut veterans and Gold Star families: your service and your loved ones’ sacrifices still matter. We remember.
Semper Fidelis.
