Mexicantown Community Development Corporation Since 1989, MexicantownCDC has worked to preserve and celebrate Latino culture, art and history.

Since 1989, the Mexicantown Community Development Corporation (MexicantownCDC) has long played a leading role in the revitalization of Mexicantown-SwDetroit. Informed by its guiding principle “A strong ethnic identity equals a strong economy”, MexicantownCDC would train community residents in entrepreneurship to resume economic ownership of community businesses and empowerment of community residen

ts that had been severed with the construction of the I-75 freeway in the early 1960s.

​In 2007, MexicantownCDC became a leader in the revitalization of Southwest Detroit with the $17.5 M development of its Welcome Center and Mercado buildings and outdoor plaza, honoring Latino contributions to Detroit and Michigan. Its high-quality, affordable retail space and popular Mexicantown Latino Cultural Center/Art Gallery/community meeting space, housed in the Plaza Del Norte building, ensure Southwest Detroit’s access to economic and cultural growth. Four thousand individuals currently flow monthly through the MexicantownCDC campus, conducting business with the State of Michigan’s Welcome Center, the Secretary of State offices, the DTE Energy payment center, the Detroit Works Career Center and the Southwest Economic Solutions’ offices. They also interact with the Gleaner’s of Southeastern Michigan Food Distribution hub and with a number of non-profit organizations providing services housed in the Mexicantown Mercado building.

Throughout the year, at events across Southwest Detroit, we've made space for local vendors and entrepreneurs to set up, sell, and connect with new customers. No storefront lease, no big overhead, just a real chance to test an idea and see it work.

🛍️ Las grandes ideas empiezan pequeñas, a veces literalmente, en una carpa de pop-up un sábado.

Our barista training program gives Southwest Detroit residents hands-on skills, real experience behind the counter, and a genuine path to steady work. No experience needed, just willingness to learn and show up.

Con Ganas is on view thru Friday, July 31.

For the past month, MexicantownCDC Galería has held a show that felt different than most, curated by Irene Perez, bringing together Latine artists from across the country whose work carried identity, memory, and resilience into one room in Plaza del Norte. Spaces like this one don't come around often, a gallery built by and for the community, giving Latine artists a place to show work that doesn't always get room elsewhere. That's what made this show matter.

Durante el último mes, MexicantownCDC Galería ha tenido una exhibición distinta a las demás, curada por Irene Perez, reuniendo a artistas latines de todo el país cuyo trabajo trajo identidad, memoria y resiliencia a un solo espacio en Plaza del Norte. Espacios así no son comunes, una galería hecha por y para la comunidad, que le da a los artistas latinos un lugar para mostrar trabajo que no siempre encuentra espacio en otros lados. Eso fue lo que hizo importante esta exhibición.

Detroit turns 325 this year, and it's worth remembering that this city's story was never written by one neighborhood alone. Mexicantown has been part of that story for well over a century, in the families who settled along Bagley and Vernor, the businesses that opened their doors and never closed, the mercados, the murals, the music, and the generations who kept building here even when this side of the city wasn't the one getting the headlines.

MexicantownCDC is honored to be part of Detroit's history and culture, not as a footnote, but as one of the threads that helped weave the fabric of this city. Three hundred and twenty-five years is a lot of history to carry, and we don't take it lightly that our community gets to be counted in it. We think about the folks who came before us every time we do this work, and we think about the ones who'll inherit it next.

So here's to Detroit; the whole, beautiful city of it. Southwest Detroit included. We've been here, we're still here, and we're not going anywhere.

Detroit cumple 325 años este año, y vale la pena recordar que la historia de esta ciudad nunca la escribió un solo vecindario. Mexicantown ha sido parte de esa historia por más de un siglo, en las familias que se establecieron a lo largo de Bagley y Vernor, en los negocios que abrieron sus puertas y nunca las cerraron, en los mercados, los murales, la música, y las generaciones que siguieron construyendo aquí incluso cuando este lado de la ciudad no era el que aparecía en los titulares.

MexicantownCDC se siente honrado de ser parte de la historia y cultura de Detroit, no como una nota al pie, sino como uno de los hilos que ayudó a tejer el tapiz de esta ciudad. Trescientos veinticinco años es mucha historia por contar, y no tomamos a la ligera que la historia de nuestra comunidad sea contada en ella. Pensamos en quienes vinieron antes que nosotros cada vez que hacemos este trabajo, y pensamos en quienes lo heredarán después.

Así que, un brindis por Detroit; la ciudad completa y hermosa que es. Southwest Detroit incluido. Hemos estado aquí, seguimos aquí, y no nos vamos a ninguna parte.
