FUTURE RSU 3 ANNOUNCES NAMING of the DAVID A. STEVENSON “STEVO” FUND to Support the Clifford Performing Arts Center
Unity, Maine — Future RSU 3 is proud to announce the official naming of its endowed fund, the David A. Stevenson “Stevo” Fund, in honor of the late Dr. David A. Stevenson, a beloved choral educator at RSU 3 schools whose impact continues to resonate across generations of students and the broader community.
The fund has already played a vital role in supporting the Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View, financing major repairs and upgrades to lighting systems and sound equipment. Moving forward, the fund will continue to support essential improvements and enhancements to ensure the facility remains a vibrant hub for the performing arts.
Dr. Stevenson, who retired in 2018 and passed away in 2024, dedicated over 40 years to music education in Maine, including more than 30 years at Mount View. During his tenure, he taught choral arts and music theory, served as Fine Arts Department Chair, and directed the acclaimed Mount View Chamber Singers, a select ensemble that performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His earlier career included teaching roles in Boothbay, Searsport, and Hinckley. Dr. Stevenson held a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting, and a Doctor of Musical Arts.
Affectionately known as “Stevo” by his students, Dr. Stevenson was widely admired not only for his musical excellence but also for his ability to bring people together. Former student Lynsie Doherty reflected on his influence, recalling a time when the choral program was central to student life: “Chamber Singers were fierce, Chorale just as competitive, and the Chorus classes overflowed with students from every corner of the school — popular kids, rednecks, and everyone in between. We were all drawn together by one remarkable teacher: Mr. Stevenson.”
Scott Smith, Chamber Singers alumni coordinator, echoed that sentiment: “He connected with us and cared . . . but the music made it special. The music was part of you. Chamber Singers Alumni all feel like we’re part of an extended family that share the same love and appreciation for music that he did. I’m so happy to see this fund named in his memory and I hope it will help facilitate and support many more passionate students in the arts for years to come.”
Future RSU 3 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by a volunteer board of community members. Its earliest triumph was the successful campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View which was dedicated in 2009 when the new school complex opened. Through the generosity of more than 400 donors and support from the Unity Foundation, over $600,000 was raised to bring the state-of-the-art performance venue to life for students and residents alike.
The David A. Stevenson “Stevo” Fund has grown steadily over the years, bolstered by Chamber Singers Alumni Reunion Concerts organized by Future RSU 3 with the support of Dr. Stevenson, those current Chamber Singers, Chamber Singers Alumni, and community.
Community members are invited to honor Dr. Stevenson’s legacy by contributing to the fund. Donations may be mailed to:
