FUTURE RSU 3 ANNOUNCES NAMING of the DAVID A. STEVENSON “STEVO” FUND to Support the Clifford Performing Arts Center

Unity, Maine — Future RSU 3 is proud to announce the official naming of its endowed fund, the David A. Stevenson “Stevo” Fund, in honor of the late Dr. David A. Stevenson, a beloved choral educator at RSU 3 schools whose impact continues to resonate across generations of students and the broader community.

The fund has already played a vital role in supporting the Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View, financing major repairs and upgrades to lighting systems and sound equipment. Moving forward, the fund will continue to support essential improvements and enhancements to ensure the facility remains a vibrant hub for the performing arts.

Dr. Stevenson, who retired in 2018 and passed away in 2024, dedicated over 40 years to music education in Maine, including more than 30 years at Mount View. During his tenure, he taught choral arts and music theory, served as Fine Arts Department Chair, and directed the acclaimed Mount View Chamber Singers, a select ensemble that performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His earlier career included teaching roles in Boothbay, Searsport, and Hinckley. Dr. Stevenson held a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting, and a Doctor of Musical Arts.

Affectionately known as “Stevo” by his students, Dr. Stevenson was widely admired not only for his musical excellence but also for his ability to bring people together. Former student Lynsie Doherty reflected on his influence, recalling a time when the choral program was central to student life: “Chamber Singers were fierce, Chorale just as competitive, and the Chorus classes overflowed with students from every corner of the school — popular kids, rednecks, and everyone in between. We were all drawn together by one remarkable teacher: Mr. Stevenson.”

Scott Smith, Chamber Singers alumni coordinator, echoed that sentiment: “He connected with us and cared . . . but the music made it special. The music was part of you. Chamber Singers Alumni all feel like we’re part of an extended family that share the same love and appreciation for music that he did. I’m so happy to see this fund named in his memory and I hope it will help facilitate and support many more passionate students in the arts for years to come.”

Future RSU 3 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by a volunteer board of community members. Its earliest triumph was the successful campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View which was dedicated in 2009 when the new school complex opened. Through the generosity of more than 400 donors and support from the Unity Foundation, over $600,000 was raised to bring the state-of-the-art performance venue to life for students and residents alike.

The David A. Stevenson “Stevo” Fund has grown steadily over the years, bolstered by Chamber Singers Alumni Reunion Concerts organized by Future RSU 3 with the support of Dr. Stevenson, those current Chamber Singers, Chamber Singers Alumni, and community.

Community members are invited to honor Dr. Stevenson’s legacy by contributing to the fund. Donations may be mailed to:

WHAT’S NEW ? . . . 2026 Officers and new Board member!

Future RSU 3 recently welcomed Catherine Hadyniak who joined as a representative from Freedom where she lives with her husband, daughter, and foreign exchange student. She moved to Freedom with her husband in 2021 when they decided to turn his grandmother’s house into their home.

Catherine grew up in Brewer and attended the University of Maine in Orono where she studied human nutrition and psychology. She was involved in a variety of clubs and held leadership positions in many of them. Catherine later went back to school for a nursing degree and she is now an oncology nurse who loves to bake sourdough goodies or work on DIY projects around the house in her free time. She is excited to join Future RSU 3 and contribute to the school district that is molding the young minds of our community.

Welcome to the Future RSU 3 Team, Catherine!

Future RSU 3 recently elected the following officers for 2026:

One Team, One Goal!
Future RSU3’s Campaign for Athletics, Recreation, and Fitness

Future RSU3’s athletic fundraising campaign efforts for the Mount View school complex are an ongoing and persevering endeavor. We continue to depend on the help and support from our wonderful parents, teachers, alumni, businesses, community members, and grant awards. We are focused on achieving our goals to provide safe and healthy enhancements to the athletic program already established.

Future RSU3 is “tackling” our athletic campaign
Phase one -- The First Things First pre-campaign began in 2008 when the buildings and fields were being constructed. We successfully funded the infrastructure that was put in place for all our fields including irrigation and potable water, power, and sewer for the fields and a planned concession/storage/restroom building. Now on our major Athletic Enhancement Campaign, many additional features have been funded such as bleachers, permanent multi-sport scoreboards for the track, football, soccer, and baseball fields, to name a few. Still to come — permanent scoreboards for high school softball and the middle school fields; permanent concessions building with restrooms; lighting; electronic marquee; fitness trail with outdoor fitness stations; and more!
Help us reach the Goal!
Future RSU3 is grateful for the support of local businesses and more than 250 donors who have already given. It’s a tough economic climate and many foundations who have, in the past, supported athletic, fitness, and recreation projects, have put their grant-giving on hold. Because of this, we have cut our fundraising expenses to the bone to maximize every dollar donated. Every donation, no matter what size, will make a BIG difference when we put it all together.

Future RSU3 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, powered by a board of community volunteers since 2004. We are currently seeking additional board members to represent each town in our school district. Please e-mail if you are interested in becoming an active member: [email protected]. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Future RSU3, P.O. Box 151, Unity, Maine 04988

Community-Driven Nonprofit FUTURE RSU 3 Champions Educational and Athletic Enhancements

UNITY, ME — Since its founding in 2004, FUTURE RSU 3, formerly known as Future MSAD3, has stood as a beacon of community-driven support for education in the RSU 3 school district. This independent nonprofit organization, powered entirely by local volunteers, is dedicated to raising funds for projects that enhance the educational experience and facilities across the district.

One of FUTURE’s earliest triumphs was the successful campaign for The Clifford Performing Arts Center at Mount View, which galvanized community support and brought a state-of-the-art venue to life for students and residents alike. Building on that momentum, the organization launched the Mount View Athletic Enhancement Campaign, a project aimed at adding and upgrading sports facilities at the new Mount View School complex. The initiative has funded critical improvements such as bleachers, scoreboards, and infrastructure such as potable water, electric and sewer for soccer, softball, football, baseball, hockey, and track & field.

FUTURE RSU 3 emphasizes that athletic enhancements are not just about sports—they’re about health, opportunity, and equity. “The state and district simply don’t have the resources,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “We believe investing in athletics helps our youth lead healthier, more active lives.”

The nonprofit’s mission is twofold: first, to secure major funding for facilities and capital projects that exceed state and local funding limits, and second, to sustain long-term fundraising efforts that address evolving educational needs. By doing so, FUTURE RSU 3 aims to strengthen the partnership between schools and the community, encouraging broader use and involvement in school spaces.

As FUTURE RSU 3 continues its work, it remains a testament to what a committed community can achieve when it rallies behind its schools—not just for today, but for future graduation classes to come. Please join us with your time as a board member, a community liaison, or with our fundraising efforts. Contact us at [email protected] or find us here on Facebook.
