🥛 Small Herd, Big Impact: Why Local Dairy Matters

Ever wonder what makes a small dairy farm the heartbeat of a rural community?

We caught up with a local dairy farmer to talk shop, snacks, and the "power of the cow." 🐄✨

The Simple Favorites

When it comes to the best way to enjoy organic dairy, sometimes simple is best:
Go-to snack: Just a glass of plain, cold milk. 🥛 Favorite recipes: You can’t beat a classic cheeseburger or a bowl of ice cream! 🍔🍦

More Than Just a Meal
For our local farmers, organic dairy isn't just about what’s on the plate — it’s about fueling an active lifestyle with nutrient-dense food that’s available locally 365 days a year. Look for local organic dairy when you shop and remember you’re supporting more than just a farm — you’re supporting an entire community. 🏡💚

What’s your favorite organic dairy product to keep stocked in the fridge? Tell us in the comments! 👇

Join us on June 25, 5-7 p.m. a diversified vegetable farm, to see various infrastructure and soil health practices at work. Whatley Farm in Topsham is a certified organic family farm for farmers’ markets.

We will discuss the many considerations for producing a diverse array of vegetables including soil preparation alongside MOFGA’s Crop Specialist Caleb Goossen.

Celebrate the abundance of National Dairy Month! 🌿🥛
June marks the "Spring Flush," a tradition since 1939 honoring the surge of milk that comes when cows graze on lush, green pastures. In a world of instant gratification, dairy reminds us to slow down and honor the seasons.
How to celebrate local organic dairy this month:

Craft a Cheese Plate: Pair local favorites like Cosmic Goat Farm & Creamery with seasonal fruits for your next picnic. 🧀

Cook with the Seasons: Try Roberta Bailey’s recipes, like savory spinach tarts or butter-sage pasta, to elevate your spring greens. 🥧

Shop Smart: Brands like Organic Valley and Stonyfield source directly from our local family farms! 🛒

Find Local: Use the MOFGA Certification database to find producers or check the Real Maine guide to verify your milk's origin.

Ready to commit? Take the Northeast Organic Family Farm Partnership pledge and support the heartbeat of our regional food system. 🤝✨ https://www.saveorganicfamilyfarms.org/

USDA Cost-Share Delays Are Hurting Organic Farms — Your Voice Can Help

Organic farms still haven’t received their 2025 certification cost-share reimbursements, despite Congress authorizing the funds.

These delays are putting financial pressure on organic operations and threatening the viability of small and midsize farms. Congress has already done its part by providing funding. Now USDA must deliver the support farmers are counting on.

We are heading back to the table with Hannaford executives on June 16 to continue pushing for a Maine-First Sourcing policy. We want to show up with thousands of petitions conveying just how many Mainers want to purchase food grown by their neighbors.

MOFGA has been fighting for organic for 55 years, and will continue advocating for change, but we can’t do it alone. Help us reach 5,000 signatures by signing the petition and sharing this post with your community!
