Thank you to our dedicated volunteer crew for coming out to help clear an old timber landing at Fowler Bog Preserve this morning in preparation for planting climate-resilient and wildlife-friendly trees and shrubs! As part of an updated Forest Management Plan for this conservation area, we are returning ten former landings to early successional stage growth to benefit grouse and woodcock, and on two of these landings we are experimenting with growing plants that will provide good forage for wildlife in the future. Today we started with butternut trees and focused on continued clearing at the second landing. If you are interested in participating in tree plantings please send us an email at info[at]sebasticookrlt.org. Trees and shrubs will be delivered in the next week or so and it's important to get them in the ground soon after for greatest success. It was a beautiful day to work outside, and it's easy to get distracted looking at plants beginning to pop from this warm spring weather! We also spotted a shrub unfamiliar to us - eastern leatherwood! The flowers were delicate and beautiful.

Soil scientist Ron Desrosiers led one of the statewide Jane’s Walks this past weekend at SRLT’s Richardson Memorial Preserve and nearby locations in Unity. He explained how underlying soils helped shape human uses of the landscape, provided a timeline for changes in farming since the 1700s, shared a collection of artifacts from past agricultural use of his family property, and highlighted the old dam wall where Town Farm Rd. meets Sandy Stream, which once supported an iron forge. It was a fascinating walk and talk! Thanks to Ron for helping us learn more about the history of this special place in the Sebasticook River watershed. You can find out more about Jane's Walk ME at janeswalkme.org.

Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day 2026 by joining Sebasticook Regional Land Trust for our most popular walk of the year through the Unity wetlands along the raised esker at the Rines Wetlands and Wildlife Preserve. Bird life abounds along this trail on the west side of Bog Brook. The timing will allow us to enjoy arriving spring migrants before the foliage dominates the view. The round-trip walk is a mile and a half and departs from the trailhead parking lot on Rt. 139, 2.3 miles west of Main St. SRLT board secretary Tom Aversa will lead the walk. All are welcome but please leave the pets at home. To more fully enjoy the walk, binoculars will be indispensable. Although the trail is dry, wear waterproof footwear for muddy spots and early morning dew. For more property information, visit the Community Lands page on our website.
Please practice tick safety (long pants, socks). Participation is limited so please pre-register at our website. Nashville Warbler photo by Tom Aversa.

We spent a terrific morning on the Connor Mill Trail on this beautiful spring day ... a BIG THANK YOU to the volunteer crew helping us to get the trail ready for the season! We put in the metal bridge across Bacon Brook, removed old bog bridges, picked up roadside trash, and cleared trees from the trail. It’s a lovely trail for exploring this time of year with spring ephemeral wild flowers such as bloodroot, trillium, and trout lily just coming into bloom. Some sections are wet with recent rain, so if you venture out be prepared with proper footwear!
