For our October neighborhood meeting, we are hosting a special Candidate Meet & Greet & Forum and inviting candidates running for Congressional, State Legislature, County, and School Board offices who represent the Westside.

This is an opportunity for our residents and Westside community to meet the candidates, hear about their values and priorities, and learn what they plan to do for our community.

We have invited candidates from both Democratic and Republican parties. This is not a debate—it is an opportunity to listen, learn, and make your own informed decision.

❤️ HONORING THE HISTORY OF BARRIO EL RIO — AUGUST 15, 1970 ❤️

Our neighborhood’s history is a reminder of what can happen when a community comes together and stands up for what it deserves.

As President of the Barrio El Rio Neighborhood Association, I believe it is important that we remember and share this history. The people who came before us organized, advocated, and fought for their families and their neighborhood. Their voices helped shape the community we know today.

Barrio El Rio is more than a neighborhood. It is a community built on history, resilience, culture, and the power of people coming together. We owe it to the generations before us to preserve that history and continue advocating for the generations to come.

Let us never forget the residents who stood on that golf course and demanded to be heard. Their story deserves to be remembered and passed on to our children and grandchildren. ❤️✊🏽

On August 15, 1970, hundreds of people walked onto the El Rio Golf Course in Tucson. They carried food and spread blankets on the grass. It was a picnic with a message.

The city had bought the course in 1968. The neighborhoods beside it, Barrio El Rio and Barrio Hollywood, had no paved streets or sidewalks. The residents wanted a park.

By June, the El Rio Coalition had more than 2,000 signatures on a petition. The city did not answer.

A grandmother named Sacramento Rodriguez led the march. Families came with children. Women made burritos for the police who guarded the gate.

The pickets went on for months. A neighborhood center opened in 1972.
