Last week, we had our first gathering in the actual park since fall of last year. Armory had been fully fenced off for about 10 months, leaving us to congregate on the sidewalk outside while not much of anything was done in the majority of the park itself. It was a frustrating time for people who frequent Armory for a variety of reasons, and one that didn’t need to happen at all. But now, the park is open. Well, mostly open. Work continues by the senior center, and on Wednesday, much of the new grass remained fenced off. There’s a dog run and a new stage. The part of the park we use is mostly unchanged, not even turf improvements with the usual bare patches and soggy mud pits. Still no trash can. All in all, it cost $1.7 million.
Our many complaints aside, it was VERY nice to have the park back. Rather than being scattered along the curb, we got to once again experience the joy of actually being together in a shared space. Big crowd came to share a meal and find additional forms of support. We had a chance to stretch out and relax, sit in the grass, and enjoy what turned out to be a beautiful evening. We missed you Armory Park, welcome back.
