We 💖 when public art from our programming becomes a permanent part of our community! Placemaking is such an essential part of creating a community people feel connected to - one filled with personality, creativity, and reasons to stop and stay awhile.

Art gets people talking, makes everyday spaces memorable, and gives us something to call our own. More of this, please! 🎨💖

This fall, a sculpture previously displayed in downtown Troy will find a permanent home as the centerpiece of the McKaig Avenue and Dorset Road roundabout.

Sculptor Bob Doster’s “Summer Wind was featured in downtown Troy during Troy Main Street’s 2023 Sculptures on the Square exhibit. This long-awaited final piece of the roundabout, which opened in 2019, will add a safety feature through vertical landscaping as recommended by traffic engineers. Studies by the U.S. Department of Transportation and other organizations have found that landscaping with tall vertical dimensions has positive impacts, such as significant speed reduction, at roundabouts.

Doster’s work has been featured in publications, broadcasts, museums, and galleries worldwide. He is the recipient of numerous awards in the world of sculpture, including the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award, South Carolina’s highest recognition in arts.

“Summer Wind” will serve as both a safety feature and a new addition to Troy’s growing collection of public art. It is set to be installed late next week, as weather permits.

The countdown is ON! In about FOUR weeks, we’ll be bringing in the Christmas tree, and all this work around the fountain will be wrapped up before then!

And for those still confused by the orange barrels and cones… THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE IS OPEN! They’re just there to adjust traffic and give crews room to work. That’s it. No downtown apocalypse. Just progress. 😉
