Providing Over 109 Years of Service to Osteopathic Physicians and Their Patients. Dr. Still was dissatisfied with the effectiveness of 19th century medicine.

Osteopathic medicine is a unique form of American medical care that was started in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O. He believed that many of the treatments and medications of his day were useless or even harmful. Dr. Still was one of the first in his time to study the attributes of good health so that he could better understand the process of disease. In response, Dr. Still developed a philosophy of medicine based on ideas that date back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine. That philosophy focuses on the unity of all body parts. Dr. Still identified the musculoskeletal system as a key element of health. He recognized the body's ability to heal itself and stressed preventive medicine, eating properly and keeping fit. Dr. Still pioneered the concept of "wellness" more than 130 years ago. In today's terms, D.O.s evaluate each patient's personal health risks-such as smoking, high blood pressure, excessive cholesterol levels, stress and other lifestyle factors. In coordination with prescribing appropriate medical treatment, osteopathic physicians act as teachers to help patients take more responsibility for their well-being and to change un-healthy patterns. Osteopathic medicine is one of the fastest growing healthcare professions in the U.S. and brings a unique philosophy to traditional medicine. With a strong emphasis on the inter-relationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones and organs, doctors of osteopathic medicine, or D.O.s, apply the philosophy of treating the whole person to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury

Who was your Fellow Award sponsor, and what qualities did you most admire in them?
"My Fellow Award sponsor was Dr. Joel Feder, who has been a mentor throughout my career. He has continually encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and pursue leadership opportunities, including serving as President of the Kansas Society of the ACOFP and joining the Kansas Academy of Osteopathic Medicine Board. Dr. Feder has always challenged me to grow professionally and personally, and he continues to inspire me to strive to do more and be better."

What inspired you to pursue the Fellow Award and/or Distinguished Fellow Award? Was it a personal decision, or did someone encourage you?
"Dr. Feder has been a constant source of encouragement, continually motivating me to pursue becoming a Distinguished Fellow. Our state has only five Fellows, and just one has achieved Distinguished Fellow status, making this an especially meaningful goal."

Has becoming a Fellow influenced the trajectory of your career? If so, how?
"Becoming a Fellow was a pivotal milestone in my career. It served as the catalyst for my transition into administrative leadership within our organization, ultimately leading me to pursue and earn my Master of Medical Management (MMM)."

In one word, what does the Conclave of Fellows mean to you?
"Family."
