Toledo Historical Society of Toledo, Washington The Toledo Historical Society is a non-profit organization created in 2004 to preserve the historical significance of the town of Toledo, Washington.

Our vision is to create an environment that encourages the community to become involved in all aspects of their history by expanding its collections and making them available to the general public. The Society acquires, maintains and displays artifacts and documents related to the History of the greater Toledo area and history in general. The Society provides Scholarship funds in honor of each dec

Simon Plamondon was born on or about May 21, 1782, in Quebec, Canada. He was the earliest white man to settle in what was to become Lewis County, Washington.

ON THIS DAY in 1969:
Thomas J. Kinsman, from Toledo, Washington was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon on May 17, 1969, for his actions in the Vietnam War. On February 6, 1968 Kinsman threw himself upon a gr***de, shielding his company from the blast. He received severe head and chest wounds but saved seven of his fellow soldiers. Thomas Kinsman passed away in May 2017, at age 72.

MINUTES for Monday, April 27, 2026

1. We approved last meeting's minutes, then promptly consumed the brownies that were brought by Don while recognizing that Margaret will turn 100 years old later this summer.

2. Regular Business
a. Treasury Report -- $2,787.91 in bank. CD $7,334.91. PSE gas bill $94.58.
b. Members Report -- currently we have 25 paid members.
c. Exhibits -- City has requested to have historical items displayed on their front counter. Mike will work on this.
d. Acquisitions -- We decided to charge $15 each for Don's America250 t-shirts to be sold on Cheese Saturday. Don will donate some hats. He will be reimbursed for the shirts.
e. Facebook & Website -- Larry said Website updates are being made though not yet fully loaded. Melody has our Facebook up and running. Sandy said Mail Chimp is in the works.
f. Greater Toledo Heritage and Horizons -- Larry plans to be in the Vader May Day parade and the Cheese Day parade with a GTHH banner on his truck.

3. Other Business
a. Banners -- Joh installed a "Celeste" banner on City Hall and a Steamboat/America 250 banner on the fence at the water tanks. She is working with the City to replace the interpretive sign.
b. Booths -- Sandy and Joh are putting together details for a booth on Cheese Saturday in the middle school. We voted to let them spend up to $250. Mike gave Sandy a button-making machine to use this summer. Sandy has designed some simple games to attract people to our booth. And Don's America250 t-shirts will be sold as well.
c. Grants -- Joh says there are several grant possibilities she is looking at.
d. America at 250 -- Ten dates in Toledo. (see the list below). THSociety will meet with others at City Hall at 3pm on the 2nd Mondays: May 11, Jun 8, Jul 13, Aug 10
c. Founders Day -- set for October 10. Place TBA.

4. "On This Day" in April
4/4/1889, Toledo folks demanded that the Kellogg Transportation Company build a steamboat that could traverse the river in all seasons. The result was the Chester.
4/6/1906, a reunion of the Toledo Post #7 of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Toledo Woman's Relief Corps was held to perpetuate the memory of the American Civil War.
4/15/1912, Toledo/Boistfort hop magnate, Herman Klaber, died with 1500 others on the Titanic.
4/24/1931, insurance rate increased because Toledo people were storing gasoline in their homes.
4/28/1918, Portland tourists described their "beautiful trip through the woods" to Toledo.
Michele added April 13, 1949, when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook up St. Mary's Academy.

America250 Dates for Toledo

May 25 Memorial Day
Toledo Lions Club will work with the American Legion in recognizing America’s 250th anniversary.

May 30 Clean Up Day (Day of Service)
Toledoans are encouraged to join in this public service for our Town. School kids can get their public service requirements satisfied.

June 14 Flag Day (100 Flags from vision:Toledo)
Toledoans are encouraged to display an American flag at their homes and businesses. Flags will be displayed on poles throughout the Town.

July 4 Independence Day (Read the Declaration of Independence)
Everyone will recognize America’s 250th anniversary in their own way.

July 11 Cheese Day (City booth for Apple Pie eating)
Organizations will recognize America’s 250th anniversary.

August 7 -9 Bluegrass Festival
The City of Toledo will welcome the 42nd Mount St. Helens Bluegrass Festival.

September 12 Day and Walk in the Park (THSociety kid activities)
Toledo Park Board will work with the Borte Family by recognizing America’s 250th anniversary.

October 10 Founders' Day
Toledo Historical Society will celebrate Toledo history and recognize America’s 250th anniversary.

November 11 Veterans' Day
Toledo Lions Club will work with the American Legion by recognizing America’s 250th anniversary.

December 31 Giant Cheese Ball Drop
vision:Toledo will recognize America’s 250th anniversary with a flag draped Cheese Ball.
