Bob Paugh began learning the machinist trade at age 14 when he went to work as a cleanup boy in the machine shop. He attended a machinist trade school in lieu of a standard high school curriculum and began work as a machinist at a young age. He always said that getting that training saved his life. It gave him a vocation and a steady income to support his debilitated father. After his death, he wanted his estate to offer that same opportunity to young people, especially those entering the trades, by helping to finance their training. However, the scholarship can be awarded to any student seeking to gain additional training and education to help them increase their prospects of employment and/or entrepreneurial enterprises.

The estate of Robert B. Paugh is awarding its first annual scholarship award. A $10,000 scholarship is being awarded each to Ryker Sorensen and Olivia Hill.

Norman Baird grew up on a small farm in the Umpqua Valley near Roseburg Oregon where he learned the value of hard work. Norm graduated from Oakland High School in 1962 as valedictorian, student body president and president of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in electrical engineering. Norm joined the Navy where he spent five years teaching nuclear science to young naval officers. Following an early retirement from Pac NW Bell, he spent 8 years teaching science at Grant High School in Portland before retiring again and settling in Toledo.

Norm was an avid woodworker and volunteered teaching and helping others. Norm was one of the original founding board members of Vision-Toledo. He loved riddles and math puzzles and challenging others as such. He had a passion for finding more than one correct answer.

It was Norms intent that this award recipient be one who demonstrates a true love for science and math, and perhaps a “tinkerer” who thinks outside the box and finds real world applications through the principles and ideas of science and math.

The 3rd annual Norman Baird Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $24,000 each paid over four years, is being awarded to Treyton Marty, Cole Langhaim, and Carter Nash.

Evelyn Grace (Pankey) Mackey was born in 1910 and died in 2001. She attended school through the eighth grade in Potlatch, Idaho. Her parents decided that girls did not need to attend high school, and Grace became a live-in domestic servant for a local family. Four years later she attended the high school graduation of her former classmates and realized what she had missed. She enrolled in high school and excelled in both sports and academics.
In April of 1930 she secretly eloped with a local boy, Harry Lewis Mackey. Their marriage was kept secret because in those days married people could not attend high school, and Grace would not graduate until June. She completed four years of high school in three years, was the captain of the girls’ basketball team, and graduated as valedictorian of her class.

She always valued the education she received. In appreciation, she donated $75,000 to establish this scholarship fund to help you (and others) continue your education. Her three sons attended Toledo High School: Wilbur Marvin (Bill) Mackey, class of 1952; Robert Lewis (Bob) Mackey, class of 1954; and Melvin Ellis Mackey, class of 1957. Congratulations and best wishes for an enjoyable and successful college experience. You earned it!

A $2,000 Evelyn Grace Mackey Scholarship is awarded to Hope Gould.

At its 46th reunion the Class of 1957 decided to establish an endowed scholarship for students of Toledo High School. The purpose was to help a graduate with college expenses, to memorialize the class of 1957, and to hopefully inspire other classes to do the same. The first two goals have succeeded. The members of the Class of 1957 would like to challenge fellow alumni from other classes to surpass their efforts to help current Toledo graduates. The 23rd recipient of the Class of 1957 scholarship in the amount of $2,000 is KaiNani Kealoha.
