Friends of Retired Greyhounds

Friends of Retired Greyhounds Friends of Retired Greyhounds 501(c)3 Non Profit Greyhound Adoption Organization Friends of Retired Greyhounds works with race kennels across the U.S.

FORgreyhounds was started April 12, 2001 when seven friends met and voted to start an adoption group to help retired racing greyhounds find couches. FORgreyhounds, now Friends of Retired Greyhounds organization’s key mission then and now remains the same. Fast-forward twelve years and Friends of Retired Greyhounds is bigger and more efficient than before. With years of experience under our belts o

f placing greyhounds in their forever and loving homes, the sky is the limit with what we will be able to accomplish in the years to come. to obtain as many retired racers as we are able. We also accept greyhounds from greyhound farms and shelters. The greyhounds are put through a very thorough medical check including: spay/neuter, dental cleaning, full shots, heartworm test, fecal test, micro chipping, and a full physical. Once they are medically cleared, they go to private foster homes until adoption. Our adoption program is the most important piece of the organization. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs, but may not be appropriate for every household. The adoption of a greyhound is a very involved process. FORG works hard to make certain the adoptive home is the right and permanent home for a greyhound, and the greyhound is the best match for the household. FORG works in partnership with each adoptive parent to place the best match with him or her. To begin the process an adopter will fill out an adoption application, which is than sent to our adoption director Lee Simpson, who reviews it and replies back to the applicant within 24 to 48 hours. Lee or one of her adoption coordinators then contacts the adopter and the process begins. The first step in the adoption process is a home visit. During our home visit, we answer any questions an adopter may have, give them necessary information about greyhounds in general and their transition from their role as an athlete to that of a pet and make sure the environment is favorable and safe for the grey. We make sure they have an understanding that a greyhound is a sight hound, that needs to be leashed when not in an enclosed area, and that they have very little body fat so they are not an outside dog (if you’re hot they are hot and if you are cold they are cold). We are also looking at the circumstances and conditions that are necessary for us to complement with an appropriate grey to match those conditions. Once we get a good feel for the dynamics of a household, we begin the process of matching a grey to the adopters’ situation. We will make recommendations of certain greys for an adopter to meet but it will be up to the adopter to find the one that he/she falls in love with. For many, it may the first one they meet. For others they will need to meet many. The timing of all this varies depending upon many circumstances. During normal times, the turnaround time from start to finish, is around two to three weeks. Foster families help our greys get used to a life of full retirement. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that requires a real commitment. A grey comes from the track with no knowledge of a normal pet’s life. The private foster homes keep the greys until they get adopted and teach them the basics of home living. Patient fosters help a grey transition into the outside world and become a good prospective pet. The foster parent is one of the most important people in the greyhound's road to a forever home and happy life. It is one of the most important elements in forming the grey's hopeful future. We have found that foster homes are the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog’s particular needs. The wonderful part of fostering is knowing that you played a tremendous and extremely crucial role in getting a grey ready for its loving and forever home. Fosters really matter, and they make a big difference!

Hi friends, it’s me Tank 🐾

Just checking in since my first intro!

I’m doing really well in my foster home. Turns out that kitties are great roommates and kids are pretty fun too- I’m being very polite with everyone 😊

I’m feeling more settled every day and really enjoying this home life thing. I think I’m ready for my forever home! Could it be with you?

Hello Colorado friends!

I’m Rascal, a 2-year-old male lurcher (greyhound mix). I’m new to Colorado and the foster life so I am interested in investigating absolutely everything!! A funny sound? I’ll check it out. A leaf blowing across the yard? Better inspect that too!

I’m a smart boy who learns quickly and loves meeting new people and furry friends. I’ve been getting along great with my greyhound foster sibling, but I wouldn’t mind being your one and only so I can soak up all the attention.

I’m sleeping through the night like a good boy and am doing well with small dogs, too. I might even be cat workable but we’ll have to take things slow.

If you’re looking for a sweet, friendly sidekick who’s always ready for the next adventure, I might be your guy!

Hello Colorado friends!

I’m Otto! If you’re reading this, it’s too late- you already want to adopt me because I hypnotised you with my mesmerising eyes! 👀

I just celebrated my 2nd birthday last week, and my wish is simple: a forever family of my very own. I’m a handsome lurcher who loves people, attention, and soaking up all the affection I can get. I’m currently living with a small dog and doing great, and I’m working hard on polishing my leash manners so I can be the best adventure buddy possible.

If you’re looking for a young, sweet, people-loving guy I think we should meet. Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org. Colorado adoptions only

Hello Colorado friends!

My name is Tank, and if my amazing eyes don’t catch your attention, my sweet personality will. I’m a handsome 4-year-old male lurcher (greyhound mix) who loves making dog friends, enjoys being out and about, and is learning my leash skills like a good boy.

I’m a big guy with an even bigger heart, and I’m ready to find the family I’ve been waiting for.

Hi Colorado friends! I’m Glittersparkle, but my friends call me Sparkle. (I tried to get them to call me “Her Royal Glitter Majesty Sparkle Princess” but they didn’t go for it. ✨ 👑 )

I’m turning 6 on June 3rd, and I’m hoping to get my forever family for my birthday present!

I take my greyhound responsibilities very seriously. I especially enjoy the resting part as you can see from the photos in the comments. 😴 I love having a few different dog beds around the house for maximum lounging efficiency, and so far I haven’t even tried getting on the couch. Who needs a couch with all these BEDS! I’m great on walks, good on my harness, and I’ll even wear sweaters in the rain like a little fashion icon. Squirrels are extremely interesting. Birds are slightly terrifying.

I’m not much of a barker, but I am very talented at leaning dramatically against people’s legs and standing directly in doorways like a beautiful roadblock.

Some barky dogs on walks make me a little unsure, but I’m comfortable with the Labrador next door and generally prefer calm company.

If you adopt me I come with a personally selected possum toy that I got from Lowe’s because it’s my favorite. 🥰

My foster family says I’m incredibly sweet, gentle, and easygoing, and now that my recent dental work is behind me, my sparkly personality is really starting to shine. ✨ Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org! Colorado adoptions only

Hi, Colorado friends! 🐾 ❤️ Mark and Skye here, just looking as adorable as ever with a plea to find our second chance at our forever home in Colorado. Our friends at FORG also wanted to make sure everyone knows only one adoption fee is needed for us both. We just need a place to call home. 🏠 In case you missed our story:

We had a home with people who loved us very much. When they moved into a retirement community, everyone believed we would live there too. But after we moved in we got a little testy with another dog, and suddenly we needed a new place to land.

We are Mark, an 8.5-year-old black boy, and Skye, a 6.5-year-old white and brindle girl. We’ve spent our lives together and are closely bonded, so we’re looking for a home where we can stay side by side.

The good news is we’re doing great in our foster home. We’re settling in, showing our sweet and easygoing nature, and enjoying the comfort of a routine again. We just need a home without other dogs or cats so we can feel safe and relaxed.

We didn’t expect to be starting over, but we know our people or person is out there. Someone willing to give two good dogs a second chance, together.

Apply to adopt us today at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org. 🐾 ❤️
