Received last night in my Milk Meg messages:
"My doctor just told me, 'Well you can start feeding him less now that he is 12 months old. There is no nutritional benefit to him anymore'"...
A few problems with this statement:
1. Actually your milk continues to give your child nutritional benefits, immune building properties and anti-infect, anti-microbial, ant-viral components the ENTIRE time they breastfeed for. It doesn't just stop working because the child reaches a year old. Interestingly this will also be the doctor who in the next breath recommends daily intake of COW'S milk. Made for a growing baby calf. Oh the irony.
2. If you think that breastfeeding toddlers is only about nutritional benefits then you have no idea how much comfort breastfeeding brings them! Pain relief, comfort and reassurance.
3. Suggesting that a mother of a breastfeeding twelve month old just simply start to "cut out feeds" does not have an understanding of what that entails. It's not as easy as just dropping feeds. Breastfeeding 12 month olds often feed as frequently as a newborn if they are not busy and distracted...totally normal for this age.
