Halcyon Home is a refuge for domestic violence survivors.

We provide free and confidential residential and non-residential services to adults and their dependent children who are in abusive relationships.

Believe them. Listen to them. Don’t blame them.

If someone trusts you enough to tell you about abuse, that’s a big moment. You don’t have to have all the answers. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is:
“I believe you. I’m here for you. How can I help?”

Strong social support can be a protective factor.

The CDC identifies strong social support networks and stable, positive relationships as protective factors related to intimate partner violence.

Sometimes simply knowing someone cares can make a difference. Check on your people. Listen without judgment. Let them know you’re there.

Your friend may not need you to “fix” the situation. They may need you to listen.

If someone you love tells you they’re experiencing abuse, start by listening. Ask, “How can I help?” Respect their choices and support their safety.

The CDC defines an intimate partner as including current and former spouses and dating partners.

A relationship ending doesn’t always mean the abuse ends. Support and safety planning can still matter after a relationship is over.
