Operation Red Light

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A two-year investigation called “Operation Red Light” has revealed s*x trafficking operations in homes and strip malls across Lee County, Florida, with law enforcement and survivors working to address the issue.

While millions watched the World Cup, law enforcement was working behind the scenes.

With the support from the DHS Center for Countering Human Trafficking, 905 arrests connected to human trafficking were made and 150 adults recovered 30 minors — during the 2026 tournament, according to DHS. Survivors were found in hotels, in transit, and in residences where they were being held against their will. This is what happens when awareness, training, and reporting come together.

A New Mexico court just ordered Meta to pay $567 million for the mental health harm Instagram and Facebook have caused young people. It's the second phase of a landmark trial against the company.

The breakdown: $420 million for treatment services, the rest for awareness, prevention, and screening over the next five years.

This adds to $375 million in civil penalties from March, when a jury found Meta knowingly harmed kids' mental health and hid what it knew about child s*xual exploitation on its platforms. Total tab: $942 million. That's a lot on paper, but a rounding error next to Meta's ~$60 billion in profit last year. Stock barely moved. Meta plans to appeal.

New Mexico's AG called it a message that companies will be held accountable when their designs knowingly put kids at risk. And Meta's still facing a wave of lawsuits from other families.

Take this as your reminder: know what your kids are actually doing on these apps. The platforms aren't going to protect them for you.

In 2025..

S*x trafficking can look like a child who’s scared, controlled, or suddenly “changed.” If you see a young person with an older companion who speaks for them, unexplained gifts, multiple phones, or signs of fear, don’t ignore it. Trust your gut and speak up to law enforcement.
