The land and the water are intimately connected in the Lake Sunapee Watershed. LSPA’s partnership with Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust allows us to work collaboratively on watershed scale conservation efforts. We are grateful for this partnership.

I’ll visit with Hans Carlson of the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust to hear about their work and collaboration with the LSPA.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about spiny water flea

If you boat, fish, paddle, or spend time on New Hampshire lakes, this program is for you.

Spiny water flea spreads primarily on boats, trailers, fishing gear, and other recreational equipment. Once established in a lake, there are no known effective ways to remove it. Prevention is our best defense.

Join us July 7 to learn:

🌊 What spiny water flea means for lake ecosystems
🔍 How scientists are monitoring this new invasive species

Burkehaven Lighthouse has now been successfully moved onto its new steel-supported foundation, completing a years-long effort to secure the future of all three of Lake Sunapee's historic lighthouses.

Just two years ago, both the Burkehaven and Herrick Cove lighthouses were standing on aging, deteriorating cribs that had reached the end of their useful lives. After careful planning with experienced marine engineers, and a successful fundraising effort, LSPA hired Hansen Bridge to replace the failing foundations with steel supports driven into the lakebed; a durable solution expected to last more than 60 years. (Loon Island Lighthouse, which stands on a natural rock island, has a stable foundation.)

This modern approach not only provides a longer-lasting and more cost-effective alternative to rebuilding wood cribs every 15–20 years, but also allows water to move naturally across the lake bottom, making it the preferred approach of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

This project represents years of planning, collaboration, and generous support from our community. We are deeply grateful to the many donors, volunteers, partners, contractors, and friends whose commitment has ensured that the lighthouses will continue to serve as enduring landmarks for everyone who enjoys Lake Sunapee, for generations to come.

And we are especially grateful for the phenomenal photographic skills of Midge Eliassen, who has captured every chapter of this story.

The first loon chick hatched on Lake Sunapee at the end of last week! Can you spot it in the picture below! It looks like the adults have formed a heart with their heads & necks!❤️

Please remember if you come across an adult loon or an adult with a chick to give them plenty of space (at least 150 feet or more). It's a lot of work to raise a chick so the adults need to focus all of their energy on themselves and the little one rather than worrying about the close presence of a human which they perceive as a threat.
