Routt County Riders Routt County Riders, an IMBA Chapter, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to all things cycling.

Routt County Riders began in the early 1990s as a group of mountain bikers interested in building and maintaining trails in our area. In the early 2000s, local road cyclists started showing up to meetings asking for representation to advocate for safer roads. As interest and membership grew, we began to support programs and scholarships for youth cycling, community cycling initiatives and advocacy, and both mountain and road cycling events. Today we are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Chapter club that continues to grow and represent more variations of biking, including downhill/freeride, year-round commuting, and adaptive cycling. Routt County Riders, an IMBA Chapter, is a volunteer-based, membership-driven organization. As a bicycle advocacy group, we offer input to and through numerous governmental agencies including: CDOT, Northwest Transportation Region, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Routt County, the City of Steamboat Springs, the Emerald Mountain Partnership, and others. We work to advocate for, promote, and enhance all forms of cycling on trails, roads, and pathways in Routt County. All month we’re showing you everything your RCR membership makes possible across Routt County.

Some of the most important cycling infrastructure isn’t very glamorous.

Routt County Riders helps fund and place seasonal porta-potties along popular road and gravel riding routes throughout the Yampa Valley.

Sure, they provide a much-needed pit stop when you’re miles from town, but the program has a bigger purpose. It encourages responsible riding, supports health and hygiene, and helps maintain good relationships between cyclists and the private landowners who live along our rural riding routes.

It’s one of the lesser-known ways RCR works behind the scenes to make riding in Routt County better for everyone.

A lot can happen when a community shows up with gloves, tools, and a willingness to get dirty.

In 2025, Routt County Riders partnered with local land managers and organizations for 23 volunteer work days across our community.
270+ volunteers, �1,000 volunteer person hours,�55+ miles of trail maintained and corridor cleared

Those numbers represent real work on the trails we all ride — clearing corridor, improving tread, tackling maintenance, and helping keep our local trail network running strong.

Cyclocross is back in Steamboat Springs!

Join us for cyclocross racing under the lights at the Steamboat Springs Rodeo Grounds. With races on Tuesday, October 13 and Tuesday, October 20, this community-focused race series is open to riders of all skill levels, from first-time racers to experienced competitors.

Races will feature short, fast-paced laps with obstacles, dismounts, bike carries, and plenty of classic cyclocross fun — including sections through the Rodeo Grounds arena and bleachers.

Race options include 30-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour categories. Juniors and singlespeed riders are welcome, and all bikes are allowed except e-bikes.

Racing starts at 4:30 PM.
Presented in partnership with the City of Steamboat Springs Town Challenge and sponsored by Moots.

Grab your sneakers, hop on your bike, and join the fun - Walk & Roll to School Day is back on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This annual event puts the spotlight on safe routes to school while reminding kids (and families) that walking and biking are not only healthy, but wheely fun!



This annual event highlights safer routes for walking and cycling in our community, emphasizes the importance of physical activity among children, promotes safety, and educates students about trail etiquette and the rules of the road.

Participating is easy! Students can look forward to pop-up stations along local trails like Butcherknife Canyon and at Soda Creek Elementary and Steamboat Springs High School. Kids showing safe habits can score giveaways, swag, and tasty treats to keep their feet stepping and wheels spinning.



Walk & Roll to School Day began in 1997 and is celebrated worldwide. Here in Steamboat Springs, it’s powered by teamwork between Routt County Riders, Steamboat Springs Police Department, Parks & Recreation, City of Steamboat Springs, and the Steamboat Springs School District.

Nearly 350 sixth graders. One goal: safer, more confident riders.
In 2025, Routt County Riders’ Street Smarts program brought bike education to nearly 350 sixth graders across Routt County.
Students learn the skills that can make a difference every time they get on a bike — from bike and helmet checks, rules of the road and bike handling to e-bike safety, signage and trail etiquette.
For kids still learning to ride, Street Smarts also provides individual instruction. And when access to a bike or helmet is the barrier, RCR can help there too — connecting education with programs like Bike Match to get more kids safely on two wheels.
It’s about more than learning to ride. It’s about building a generation of safe, confident and responsible cyclists in our community.

A bike sitting in one garage could change someone’s life.

Since launching in 2021, Routt County Riders’ Bike Match Program has helped put more than a 1000 bikes into the hands of people in our community.

What started as a way to connect unused bikes with people who needed them has grown into the RCR Community Bike Shop — a place where bikes can be repaired, reused, and kept rolling.

Through Bike Match, the Community Bike Shop, and partnerships with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and The Cycle Effect, we’re helping make riding more accessible throughout Routt County.

A bike can mean a way to get to work, a chance to hit the trails, or simply the freedom to ride.
